It depends on what you mean by “parent account.” You cannot replace the Nintendo Account linked to an existing Switch user, but you can change a family group’s admin, assign another adult as a parent/guardian, or move a child account to another family group. These are separate changes made through Nintendo Account settings online—not on the Switch console.
First, identify which account or role you want to change
| What you want to change | What Nintendo allows | Where to handle it |
|---|---|---|
| The Nintendo Account linked to a Switch user | Nintendo says the linked account cannot be changed to another Nintendo Account. | It cannot be replaced for that existing user. |
| The family group admin | The admin role can be changed. Nintendo requires an identity verification code sent to the registered email address. | Nintendo Account settings online. |
| The parent/guardian role | The family group admin can designate another adult who is a general Nintendo Account holder in the same family group. | Nintendo Account settings online. |
| A child account’s family group | A child account can be transferred to another family group. | Use Nintendo’s family group transfer instructions. |
Change the family group admin
If you want someone else to administer child accounts, change the family group admin rather than trying to relink a Switch user. Nintendo’s support information says the change requires an identity verification code sent to the email address registered to the account. Make sure the person handling the change can access that inbox.
Nintendo’s available instructions establish that the admin can be changed, but the exact current screen-by-screen steps are not specified here. Open Nintendo Support and follow the current account-management instructions for your region; do not assume a particular menu label if the site’s interface differs.
After the change, the former admin will no longer be able to create or delete child accounts or manage child account passwords. Child-related notification emails will go to the new admin.

- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Assign a different parent or guardian without changing the admin
The family group admin can assign another adult general Nintendo Account in the same family group as a parent/guardian. That changes who has the parent/guardian role; it does not transfer the admin role. Nintendo says an admin cannot remove their own parent/guardian role.
Use this route when the person who should provide parental oversight is changing but the family group should keep its current administrator.

Move a child account to another family group
If the child should be supervised within a different family group, transfer the child account. This is a family-group membership change, not a replacement of the Nintendo Account linked to a Switch user. Follow Nintendo’s child account transfer instructions for the current process.
Can I change the Nintendo Account linked to a Switch user?
No. Nintendo says a Nintendo Account linked to a Switch user cannot later be changed to a different Nintendo Account. The console user profile and the family group roles are distinct: changing who administers a family group does not change the account linked to a console user.

Nintendo’s support information does not establish deleting and recreating a console user as a supported way to transfer account ownership, so do not treat that as a safe workaround.
Where to make family group changes
Sign in to Nintendo Account settings using a smartphone or computer browser. The Switch can display family group members, but Nintendo says membership changes cannot be made on the console.

Keep account supervision separate from console restrictions
Nintendo Account parent/guardian restrictions and Nintendo Switch console usage limits are separate controls. Account-level restrictions can cover the eShop and certain account-related functions; set up console restrictions separately for play and system use. Child accounts cannot use the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls smartphone app.
Also, eShop funds and My Nintendo Points are managed separately between a child and parent/guardian account. Nintendo says they cannot be combined or shared, so changing family roles should not be treated as a way to move those balances.
