Most Hollow Knight: Silksong area maps are sold by Shakra, maps in the Citadel come from map machines, and several maps are free pickups in the world. Each map starts as an incomplete outline: get the Quill, explore, then rest at a bench or another resting place to record newly discovered rooms. Shakra moves as you progress, so listen for her humming; if you miss her, you can summon her in Bone Bottom.
How maps and the Quill work
Open the map from the Map page in your inventory or with the quick-map controls. An area map gives you an outline of its rooms, passages and chambers, but it does not fill in everything at once. The Quill records newly explored areas when Hornet rests; rooms may still be only partly revealed until you explore them further. The Quill does not need to be equipped. The Map and Quill reference lists the white Quill at 50 Rosaries and the Compass at 70 Rosaries. Equip the Compass to mark Hornet’s location on the map. If you do not already have a Quill, the reference also lists alternate free Quills at Trobbio’s desk in Acts 2 and 3.
Every map: source, price and requirement
The table separates Shakra’s cartography from Citadel machines and free world pickups. Prices are in Rosaries. For Greymoor and Sinner’s Road, guides disagree on the price; check Shakra’s offer in your game rather than relying on a single listed amount.

Where to find Shakra
Her route is approximate, not a fixed itinerary: she begins in The Marrow, then may appear in Bone Bottom, Deep Docks, Far Fields, Greymoor, Shellwood, Bellhart, Wormways, Hunter’s March, Blasted Steps, Sands of Karak, Mount Fay, Sinner’s Road and Bilewater as you advance. If you are near a likely encounter, listen for humming. Checkpoints below focus on recognizable rooms and progression clues rather than requiring a particular route through every chamber.
The Marrow and early regions
- The Marrow: Near the end of a long corridor with enemies and cage platforms, around a large spike-trap chamber. Shakra sells both the Mosslands and The Marrow maps here, and this is also where guides place the early Compass purchase.
- Deep Docks: Search the large chamber reached from The Marrow and listen for humming. Directions differ between guides, so use the chamber as your landmark rather than relying on a single entrance-facing instruction.
- Far Fields: Look for the tall chamber with wind currents; Shakra is in a small side room.
Greymoor, Shellwood, Bellhart and Wormways
- Greymoor: From the lower entrance, continue right into the next screen. Reaching the area is associated with obtaining the Drifter’s Cloak in GameSpot’s guide.
- Shellwood: Shakra can offer both the Shellwood and Bellhart maps here. A lower-left exit from Shellwood is one reported way into Wormways.
- Bellhart: Shakra also appears here after the Widow encounter.
- Wormways: Check an alcove in the early part of the area.
Hunter’s March, Blasted Steps and Sands of Karak
- Hunter’s March: Her position varies with route progression. GameSpot describes either a gauntlet encounter or a room before the Chapel of the Beast; the encounter differs depending on whether you have already entered Wormways.
- Blasted Steps: Look through the lower part of the large area, around its middle or second layer.
- Sands of Karak: Near the central tower at the end of the first long corridor. The tall room on the eastward route is a useful landmark.
Mount Fay, Sinner’s Road and Bilewater
- Mount Fay: Near the beginning of the area, by a bench and heat source.
- Sinner’s Road: Look along the route marked by bench signs and a spiked pendulum. Nearby caged-mantis platforming and a Simple Key landmark can help orient you.
- Bilewater: In a small chamber opening off the right side of the large central shaft, partway up. Shakra’s late-game follow-up is also tied to this area.
Recover a map if you missed Shakra
If Shakra has moved on, return to Bone Bottom. PC Gamer’s recovery directions say to climb the platforms marked with gold rings on the settlement’s right side, then strike the ring at Shakra’s usual location twice to summon her. She may also be found in Bone Bottom or later Bellhart, where missed maps can be bought.

- Journey to all-new lands, discover new powers, battle vast hordes of bugs and beasts and uncover secrets tied to your nature and your past.
Finding Citadel maps and free pickups
Citadel regions
For Grand Gate, Choral Chambers, Whispering Vaults, Whiteward, High Halls and Memorium, look for the map machine in the relevant Citadel area. These maps are not Shakra purchases. Cradle is the exception with an act-dependent route: buy its map from a machine in Act 2, or take the free map beside a broken machine in Act 3.
World pickups
The other free maps are scattered through the world rather than sold by Shakra: Underworks has a map board, Putrified Ducts a desk, Verdania an abandoned camp, Cogwork Core a mechanism, The Slab a dead bug’s shell, and Weavenest Atla and the Abyss each have a tablet. The Slab’s room requires the Key of Indolent. These landmarks identify the reported pickup source; they do not replace exploring the surrounding rooms to reveal the full map.

After obtaining Shakra’s maps, return to Bellhart’s bounty board and take the Trail’s End wish. GameSpot describes following golden rings in Bilewater toward a hidden area. This is a late-game optional objective, distinct from purchasing maps at Citadel machines; the available guide does not establish a specific reward to promise.
