You can play A Way Out for free through Friend Pass if a friend owns the full game: download the free trial from your platform’s store, then accept the owner’s invitation. Friend Pass lets you join that owner’s two-player co-op game; it is not a free, standalone copy for solo play. EA Help explains the current Friend Pass steps.
How to download and use A Way Out Friend Pass
- Check that your friend owns the full game and is on the same type of platform. EA says Friend Pass invitations are limited to friends using the same type of platform; do not assume you can invite someone across platform types.
- Find A Way Out in your digital store. Search the EA app on PC, PlayStation Store, or Xbox Store.
- Choose the free option. In the EA app, EA labels it “Play for free with Friends Pass.” On PlayStation and Xbox, look for “Free Trial.”
- Download and install the trial. EA says it is the same size as the full game, so make sure your device has enough storage. The trial will appear in your game library after installation.
- Accept your friend’s invitation. The owner sends it from the game’s main menu; accept it to join their session.
If the free-trial option does not appear, check your platform store for your region’s availability. EA specifically says the trial is unavailable in Germany; its help page does not establish availability for every other country.

What you need to play online
Both players need an internet connection and an EA account for online play. On consoles, each player also needs the required active online subscription: PlayStation Plus on PlayStation or Xbox Game Pass Core on Xbox. EA’s A Way Out product page describes the game as co-op only and says it must be played by two players.

What Friend Pass does—and does not—include
- You need an owner’s invitation. The free trial is a way to join someone who owns the game, not an unrestricted license to play independently.
- Achievements have a limitation. You may earn achievements during the trial, but EA says they will not unlock or be awarded until you purchase the full game.
- Buying is the alternative for independent access. If you want your own full-game license rather than joining an owner’s session, you will need to purchase the game. EA lists it for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox on its product page.
