To increase girlfriend progress in GTA: San Andreas, take her on dates, complete the activity she prefers, and avoid actions that make the date fail. A successful date is reported to add 5% progress; gifts and accepted kisses can add small bonuses. Each girlfriend has different preferences, so the right restaurant, driving area, and pace depend on who you are dating.
How to raise girlfriend progress
- Find her and start a date. Denise and Millie become girlfriends through the story; the other four must be found and persuaded to date CJ. Each has her own location, schedule, and appearance preferences. See the girlfriend and dating guide for character-specific details.
- Do the activity the game assigns. Dates can involve food or drinks, driving, or dancing, with some character-specific variations. The guide says dates are always food dates below 30% progress; other date types become available after progress passes that point.
- Complete the date successfully. A BradyGames strategy-guide scan from around 2005 reports that a good date earns 5%. The modern girlfriend guide also says an unsuccessful date may reduce progress. These are published guide figures, not independently verified measurements.
- Use optional bonuses when appropriate. Carry flowers or another gift and offer it when prompted while CJ is on foot. The 2026 iGrandTheftAuto guide reports a 1% gift bonus. The BradyGames scan reports another 1% for a successful kiss, while the modern guide warns that a rejected kiss can cost 1%; follow the prompt and skip a kiss if she seems unhappy.
Match the date to her preferences
Food and drink
Take her to a restaurant or bar she likes. A disliked venue can undermine the date, so learn her preferences rather than relying on one destination for every girlfriend.

Driving
Drive through an area she likes and keep to the pace she wants. A route or speed that works for one girlfriend may not work for another. The guide also describes special cases, including Denise’s drive-by and Michelle’s driving date.
Dancing
When the date calls for dancing, complete the dance minigame and reach the required score. Failing the activity can turn the date into a loss rather than a progress gain.

Raise Millie’s progress for the casino keycard
After the mission “Key to Her Heart,” Millie becomes CJ’s girlfriend. The 2026 Millie guide says her keycard is available at about 35% progress, often after two or three successful dates. The Las Venturas walkthrough also identifies obtaining the keycard as enabling later heist missions needed for 100% completion.
That guide reports a character-specific shortcut: wear the Gimp Suit on a date with Millie to trigger a special date that ends immediately and awards 10% progress. It also describes the ordinary gift bonus for her. Treat the suit method as a Millie-specific tip, not a general dating strategy.

Prevent progress from dropping
- Do not abandon a date or fail its activity; guides say an unsuccessful date can reduce progress.
- Respond to her phone request for a date and date her regularly while in her city. The girlfriend guide says neglect can lower progress, while decay pauses when CJ is outside that girlfriend’s city.
- During a jealous-girlfriend encounter, avoid being caught; the encounter can reduce the jealous girlfriend’s progress.
- Protect Denise and Millie in the current save. The guide warns that if either story girlfriend is killed, she remains dead for the rest of that save.
