How to Change the Spawn Radius in Minecraft (Java and Bedrock)

Change the Minecraft player spawn radius with an edition-specific gamerule: Bedrock uses spawnradius, while Java 1.21.11 and later uses minecraft:respawn_radius.

Use the /gamerule command, but the rule name depends on your edition and Java version. In Bedrock Edition, use /gamerule spawnradius <value>. In Java Edition 1.21.11 and later, use /gamerule minecraft:respawn_radius <value>; earlier Java versions use /gamerule spawnRadius <value>.

Which command should I use?

Edition and version Command Documented value limits
Bedrock Edition /gamerule spawnradius <integer> 0–128
Java Edition 1.21.11 and later /gamerule minecraft:respawn_radius <integer> Minimum 0; a maximum is not stated in the cited release notes
Java Edition earlier than 1.21.11 /gamerule spawnRadius <integer> Not stated

Mojang renamed Java’s spawnRadius gamerule to minecraft:respawn_radius in version 1.21.11. Tutorials using the old spelling apply to earlier Java versions; on 1.21.11 or later, use the renamed rule. See the Java Edition 1.21.11 release notes.

How do I change it?

  1. Check your edition and Java version. Choose the matching command above. Bedrock’s official command reference documents values from 0 through 128. For Java, the 1.21.11 notes establish a minimum of 0 but do not state a maximum; do not assume Bedrock’s limit applies. See Microsoft’s Bedrock gamerule command reference.
  2. Open chat or the command interface in the world or server where you want to change the rule.
  3. Read the current value first. In Bedrock, enter /gamerule spawnradius without a number. This helps you avoid relying on conflicting published defaults.
  4. Set the value. For example, in Bedrock enter /gamerule spawnradius 0 or /gamerule spawnradius 20. In Java 1.21.11 or later, enter /gamerule minecraft:respawn_radius 0 or another nonnegative value. On earlier Java versions, substitute spawnRadius for the rule name.

Command access can depend on the world or server’s permissions. Microsoft’s Bedrock command reference says this command itself does not require cheats, but that does not guarantee you have permission to run it in every world or server.

What does spawn radius control?

This gamerule affects where players may spawn in relation to the world spawn. Microsoft’s Bedrock GameRule API describes SpawnRadius as the block radius from world spawn within which a player is allowed to spawn, and notes that it does not affect Adventure mode. The API description is available in the Minecraft Creator GameRule documentation.

Minecraft - Nintendo Switch
  • Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
  • Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
  • Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
  • Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
  • Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only

It is not the radius of Java spawn chunks, and changing it does not set a bed or respawn anchor location. Those are separate mechanics.

What does setting the value to 0 do?

Zero is the documented minimum for Bedrock’s spawnradius and Java’s renamed rule in 1.21.11. It is the value to use when you want the minimum radius. The cited documentation does not describe zero as disabling player respawning altogether; it changes this radius rule, not whether the game has a respawn system.

Why do Bedrock sources show different defaults?

Microsoft Learn’s Bedrock command page lists 5 as the default, while Microsoft’s GameRule API page lists a default of 10 blocks. Because the official pages conflict, neither figure should be treated as a certain default for your world. Query the current value with /gamerule spawnradius before changing it.
