For your first trip to Ashdale, travel to the Port Sarim lodestone and speak to Gudrik. After arriving, head north past the bridge. Once you have visited Ashdale and activated its lodestone, you can return by opening Home Teleport and selecting Ashdale.
How to reach Ashdale for the first time

Travel to the Port Sarim lodestone.

Speak to Gudrik there and choose the option to travel to Ashdale.

When you arrive, head north past the bridge to continue into the area.

How to return after activating the lodestone
Once you have visited Ashdale and activated its lodestone, open the Home Teleport interface and select Ashdale. The Lodestone Network is an in-game teleport system; Ashdale is listed among its destinations in the Lodestone Network guide.
A historical tutorial account says Magda showed players how to activate the Ashdale lodestone. It documents the activation mechanic, but it is not a current step-by-step guide to activating it; see the archived New Player Experience forum thread.

If your destination is north-west of the lodestone
For a point north-west of Ashdale’s lodestone, climb the stairs north of it. The location guide identifies those stairs as the route toward that nearby destination.
Do not confuse the trip with the quest start
A Shadow over Ashdale is a separate novice quest. Jagex’s archived announcement, dated 22 April 2014, says to begin it by speaking to Gudrik in Taverley—not Port Sarim. The Port Sarim interaction is the documented travel route to Ashdale; the Taverley interaction is the quest starting point. The announcement described the quest as available to free players and members at that time, but it does not establish every current account or access condition. Is Ashdale free to play?
Ashdale is listed as a free-to-play lodestone destination in the third-party RuneHQ Transportation Guide. That listing, and the 2014 quest announcement, do not verify all current account-state conditions. The route and eligibility details may change with game updates; no current official route page or patch confirmation establishes whether the documented travel and activation steps remain unchanged.
