To get Simple Voice Chat working, install a build that matches your Minecraft version and mod loader on the client and server, finish the client’s audio setup, and make the server’s voice-chat UDP port reachable. The default is UDP 24454, but a hosted server may assign a different port; use the assigned port in the mod configuration.
1. Install the matching client and server versions
Check the Minecraft version and loader used by the world, then choose the corresponding Simple Voice Chat build from the project files. The project supports Fabric, Forge, Quilt, and NeoForge, as well as server and plugin options such as Bukkit, Spigot, and Paper. Simple Voice Chat is client-and-server software, so adding it only to your game usually is not enough: the server must also have a compatible installation.
If you rent a server, follow that provider’s installation instructions; dashboard steps vary. Keep the server offline during installation if the provider’s guide requires it.
2. Finish the in-game audio setup
For Simple Voice Chat 2.5.2 and later, the first-time setup prompt leads to onboarding when you press V. Use the setup to select your actual microphone and speaker, choose an activation mode, assign a push-to-talk key if you use one, and adjust the voice-activation level if applicable. - Push-to-talk: Your microphone transmits while you hold the chosen key.
- Voice activation: The mod transmits when input passes the selected activation level.
3. Make the server’s UDP port reachable
Voice chat uses a separate connection from Minecraft’s normal game traffic. The project’s documented default is UDP 24454; its project page warns that voice chat will not work if the required port is not open. See the Simple Voice Chat project page.
Self-hosted server
Allow the configured voice-chat port as UDP in the server machine’s firewall and, if players connect through a router, forward that UDP port there too. Opening a port depends on the operating system, router, ISP, and hosting setup; the official self-hosting guide covers the general requirements.

Docker server
Publish the voice-chat port using UDP, not just TCP. For the default port, a mapping can look like 24454:24454/udp. If your configured port differs, adjust the mapping to match it.
Managed server
A host may give your server a separate port allocation. Use the provider’s instructions to create or identify that allocation, then set the same port in Simple Voice Chat’s voicechat-server.properties file. For Modrinth-hosted servers, the Modrinth guide, published May 27, 2026, directs Paper/Purpur users to the plugins directory and Fabric, Quilt, NeoForge, and Forge users to config. Its sequence is to create the allocation, start and stop the server so the configuration is generated, edit the port= setting to the allocated value, and restart. Check the startup console for confirmation that the voice-chat server started on that port.

4. Diagnose the symptom
Crossed-out plug or “not connected”
This generally points to the voice-chat network path, not the microphone. Confirm that the port configured in voicechat-server.properties matches the port opened in the firewall, router, Docker mapping, or host allocation—and that each is configured for UDP. If you use a proxy, follow the project’s proxy setup instructions.
If the port and allocation agree, the official troubleshooting guide also identifies DDoS protection, an IPv6 source-address mismatch, VPN interference, and ISP UDP blocking as possible causes. A generic online port checker may not settle the question: a UDP application must respond for a check to confirm that service is reachable.

Only one player cannot connect
If everyone else can use voice chat, ask the affected player to try another server or network. The troubleshooting guide notes that some ISPs may block UDP, particularly on mobile data, and that a VPN can interfere. It also notes that the OpSec mod may block packets unless its whitelist is set to AUTO or the relevant packets are allowed manually.
Other players cannot hear you
Confirm onboarding is complete, the intended microphone is selected, and you are not muted. Then run the microphone test in voice-chat settings. On macOS, the official troubleshooting guide links to a separate microphone-permissions guide; consult it for the applicable permission steps.

You cannot hear other players
Check that the correct speaker or output device is selected in settings, then use the available audio test. A wrong output selection can make a working server connection seem like a mod problem.
Forge settings seem missing or unchanged
The troubleshooting guide says Forge mod version 2.4.0 changed the configuration location. The mod migrates settings and indicates the new location in the old configuration. Check the current location instructions before editing an old file.

The official server guide documents /voicechat test <PLAYERNAME> to test a player connection. It also links a command-line ping tool for checking the running voice-chat service. Use these alongside the server startup log and host allocation details to narrow down whether the problem is the server configuration or a particular player’s network.
