Both routes are paid upgrades. The PS5 edition is the Director’s Cut, which includes the Iki Island expansion and Legends online co-op mode. See the PlayStation Store listing for the edition and its features.

Upgrade a PS4 disc copy
You need a PS5 with a Blu-ray disc drive. A PS4 disc cannot qualify for its upgrade offer on a disc-free PS5.
- Install the PS4 edition on your disc-drive PS5 and start the game.
- From the game’s main menu, use the Upgrade Pass prompt or in-game store to access and purchase the relevant upgrade.
- Claim the PS5 digital edition through the game hub or PlayStation Store.
- Keep the PS4 disc inserted whenever you download or play the PS5 digital version.
PlayStation’s support page confirms the disc requirement for downloading and playing the digital upgrade.

Upgrade a digital PS4 copy
On PS5, find the offer for the edition you already own in the PlayStation Store or the game hub, then purchase that upgrade. For a digital PS4 Director’s Cut, PlayStation also identifies the in-game menu as an access point. Choose the matching route—original PS4 game or PS4 Director’s Cut—rather than buying the full PS5 edition by mistake.
Check the price in your own Store
Prices vary by region and can change, so use the amount displayed in your PlayStation Store account before confirming the purchase. The US listing currently identifies historical base upgrade amounts from August 20, 2021: $29.99 from the original PS4 game and $10.00 from the PS4 Director’s Cut. PlayStation’s July 1, 2021 launch announcement instead quoted $29.99 and $9.99 respectively. These are historical figures, not verified current prices; check the US listing or your local Store for the current offer.

If you do not own an eligible PS4 copy, buying the full PS5 Director’s Cut is an alternative. Existing owners should use the upgrade offer that matches their edition; they do not need to buy the complete game to claim an eligible upgrade.
Transfer your PS4 save
PlayStation says PS4 saved progress can transfer to the PS5 game, allowing you to continue your progress. Its Director’s Cut announcement confirms save transfer, and the Store listing also describes the ability to transfer PS4 saved progress. Those pages do not provide a complete current step-by-step transfer walkthrough, so follow the prompts shown by the game and console rather than relying on an unverified menu sequence.

What the PS5 edition adds
The PS5 Director’s Cut includes Iki Island and Legends, along with PS5-specific features listed by PlayStation: dynamic 4K resolution targeting 60 fps with a compatible 4K display, DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive trigger resistance, 3D Audio with stereo headphones, and lip sync for Japanese voiceover. These features are part of the edition, not requirements for purchasing the upgrade.
