Instead, launch Overwatch 2 through Steam and link the Battle.net account that holds the progress you want to use. Blizzard says PC progress carries over automatically; the Steam setup connects the game client to Battle.net.
Link Overwatch 2 to Steam
- Install and launch Overwatch 2 from Steam.
- When the game says a Battle.net account is required, select Open Browser.
- Follow the browser prompts to connect your Battle.net account.
- Sign in to the Battle.net account associated with the Overwatch 2 progress you want, and verify that it is the right account before confirming the link. Blizzard’s Steam linking instructions describe this in-game browser flow.
If the last step fails or you see “Prerequisite data was missing from session,” Blizzard directs players to retry the connection through Open Browser in the Steam game client.

What happens to your progress and items?
Blizzard’s cross-progression FAQ says PC progress automatically carries over into Overwatch 2, and a Battle.net account is required to play on every platform. Linking Steam does not move a separate PC profile into Steam; it lets the Steam client use the Battle.net account connected to that progress.
The FAQ also describes cross-platform merges: Hero Gallery items from platforms are present on the merged Battle.net account, duplicate cosmetics are combined, and gameplay statistics are separated by input pool. These general merge details do not establish that every Steam purchase or platform-specific entitlement behaves like a cosmetic earned on another platform, so check current item-specific guidance if that distinction matters.

If your progress came from console
The launch-period FAQ distinguishes PC from console progress: PC progress carried over automatically, while console players needed to confirm an account merge. If the progress you want originated on console, make sure that console account has already been associated with and merged into the Battle.net account you intend to use with Steam.

Make sure you are signed into the Battle.net account with the correct progress before confirming. If you linked the wrong account, do not assume you can immediately unlink it and connect a different one. Blizzard says cooldowns vary by third-party account type; the relevant warning appears in Battle.net account management when a cooldown applies, and Customer Support cannot bypass those cooldowns. Review the warning shown for your account before disconnecting or trying to link another Steam account. See Blizzard Support’s third-party platform account guidance.
