Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →How you switch controllers on ePSXe depends on what you mean: changing the emulated PlayStation pad mode, choosing a different physical controller, or assigning a controller to a player are separate tasks. On Windows, use Config > Game Pads to choose a pad type; on Android, select a connected controller under Preferences > Player 1 > Select Gamepad.
First, identify what you want to switch
- Pad type: Change the emulated PlayStation controller mode, such as digital or analog.
- Physical gamepad: Choose which connected controller supplies input.
- Player assignment: Set which gamepad controls Player 1 or another player.
These changes are not interchangeable. In particular, Windows’ F5 shortcut changes pad types; it is not documented as a way to swap physical controllers or player assignments.
Switch or configure controllers on Windows
- Open Config > Game Pads.
- Select the emulated pad type you want.
- To change a control mapping, click the PlayStation button shown in the configuration window, then press the keyboard key or joystick button you want to use.
- Select OK to save.
The official ePSXe Windows help says you can change between pad types during play with F5. That shortcut concerns the emulated pad type, not selecting another physical controller. The help explains joystick-button mapping, but does not provide a complete procedure for choosing a particular physical device or reassigning player ports.
Select a gamepad on Android
- Connect and turn on the gamepad. The ePSXe guide describes Bluetooth and wired USB through OTG; whether either works depends on the controller and Android device.
- In ePSXe, open Preferences > Player 1 > Select Gamepad and choose the connected controller.
- If controls do not match, open Preferences > Player 1 > Player 1 Map Buttons to map buttons, or Preferences > Player 1 > Player 1 Map Axis to map stick axes.
- To inspect stick readings, open Gamepad Test Axis and move the sticks. The setup guide specifies Android 3.1 or later for this axis-testing step.
The labels above follow the official ePSXe Android gamepad setup guide; if they differ in your installed version, use the closest gamepad controls in its preferences.
#1 Best Overall
- With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
Change player assignment or digital/analog mode on Android
To choose a gamepad for another player, use that player’s settings rather than changing Player 1’s selection. ePSXe’s Android input guide describes selecting a gamepad for each player. It also describes touchscreen input as “virtual.” The guide lists one- and two-player modes, plus three- or four-player play in games that support multitap; those options do not mean every game supports every player count.
Changing digital versus analog behavior is a different operation from selecting a connected controller. The ePSXe Android features page describes switching digital and analog in DualShock mode with the swap mode button. A game may not accept every pad type: ePSXe’s input guide says the emulator uses supported-mode information and may disable analog or gun modes when a game does not support them.

If the controller does not respond as expected
- Check the connection. Confirm the controller is on and recognized by the host device. On Android, test it outside ePSXe if needed; wired USB requires a compatible OTG setup.
- Confirm the selected player and device. Make sure ePSXe has the intended gamepad selected for the player you want to control.
- Correct the mappings. Remap buttons and axes in the player’s settings. On Android, use Gamepad Test Axis to see whether stick movement produces axis values.
- Check the pad mode. If the issue is digital-versus-analog behavior, change the emulated pad type rather than selecting a different physical gamepad. On Windows, F5 switches pad types; Android documents the swap mode button for digital/analog in DualShock mode.
- Check game support. A mode that ePSXe offers may still be unavailable in a particular game if that game does not support it.
