How to apply a Steam coupon

Sign in to Steam and open Inventory from your profile menu.

Add an eligible game to your cart. Steam says applicable coupons are applied automatically.

Review the cart before purchasing. To save the coupon for later, choose Change/Remove coupon.
Steam permits one coupon per item. Expired coupons are automatically removed from inventory. See Steam’s Steam Coupons guidance for the current eligibility and coupon details.

Steam does not document a general promo-code entry field in the coupon guidance. If you have a coupon, check Inventory and the cart rather than looking for a box to type in a code. For the difference between coupon and sale pricing, consult Steam’s sales and purchasing FAQ.
Why a coupon might not appear in your cart

The item is not eligible. Open the coupon in Inventory and use View Applicable Games; a coupon only applies to products covered by its terms.

The coupon has expired. Check its stated expiration date. Steam says expired coupons are removed from Inventory.

You expected it to stack with a sale. Steam says coupons and loyalty discounts do not stack with sale pricing unless the offer explicitly says otherwise.

You already used a coupon for that item. Steam allows one coupon per item.

Redeem a Steam Wallet code instead
A Wallet code funds your account; it is not a discount code. Redeem it through Steam’s Wallet code or gift card redemption page, then use the resulting Wallet balance toward eligible purchases. Steam’s Wallet guidance explains code redemption and related issues.

Steam says physical gift cards are being phased out: it expects remaining in-store stock to run out by the end of 2026 and says it will not replenish that stock. Digital gift cards will continue to be offered, though availability at a particular retailer may vary. This availability statement is Steam’s current guidance.

Re-enter the code carefully. Steam notes that characters can be easy to confuse, including 0 with Q, O, or D; 1 with I; B with 8; and G with 6.

If you bought the code at a retailer, allow several hours for activation.

If the code still does not work, contact Steam Support with a clear image or scan of the entire back of the card and the matching receipt. If the code was printed directly on a receipt, contact the retailer.
A Wallet code also cannot be used to change your account’s store country. Payment methods available to you are shown during checkout for your account’s current store country; a code is not a way to bypass regional pricing rules. See Steam’s Store Country guidance.
Can Steam apply a sale discount after you buy?
Steam says it cannot apply a sale discount to a purchase made before or after the sale period, and it does not refund the price difference when a recently purchased game later goes on sale. You may request a refund for the original purchase and buy again at the current sale price, but the refund is subject to Steam’s eligibility rules. Check the purchasing FAQ and Steam’s current refund rules before relying on that option.
Protect your Wallet code
Steam says Wallet gift cards can only be redeemed on Steam and warns that someone demanding payment in Steam Wallet gift cards is most likely targeting you in a scam. Do not share a Wallet code with a stranger or anyone pressuring you to pay with gift cards. Read Steam’s Gift Card Scams guidance.
