For PS5 as the destination, use Sony’s Data Transfer feature from a PS4 or another PS5; for PS4-to-PS4, use the separate PS4 transfer tool. Digital games can also be downloaded from the owning account’s library, while saves need their own transfer or cloud-storage route.
Choose the method for your console pair

Sony documents transfer from PS4 or PS5 to a PS5, and a separate transfer between two PS4 systems. The destination generation therefore determines the supported route. See Sony’s PS4/PS5-to-PS5 transfer instructions and its PS4-to-PS4 transfer instructions.
Transfer data to a PS5
Sony’s Data Transfer can move supported games and data from a PS4 or another PS5 to the destination PS5. It does not overwrite data already stored on the destination. Before starting, prepare both consoles:
- Sign in to the same PlayStation account on both systems.
- Install the latest available system software on both consoles.
- Synchronize trophy information.
- Connect both consoles to the same network. A LAN cable is optional; Sony says it can improve transfer speed when the consoles otherwise connect over Wi-Fi.
Start during first-time setup
When setting up the destination PS5, follow the on-screen Data Transfer prompt and select the source console. A child account cannot use Data Transfer during the destination’s initial setup; complete setup first, or use an adult account for initial setup.

Start after setup
- On the destination PS5, open Settings > System > System Software > Data Transfer > Continue.
- Follow the prompts to identify the source console and select the data to transfer.
- Keep both consoles powered on and do not change network settings or run internet connection tests while the transfer is in progress.
The destination PS5 restarts during transfer, and some game data may continue copying afterward. A game can be launched once it is marked ready; check progress in Control Center under Downloads/Uploads. Sony warns that powering off a console or changing network settings during transfer could damage or lose data. Sony’s detailed steps and data-scope notes are on its PS5 transfer support page.
Transfer between two PS4 consoles
Sony’s PS4-to-PS4 transfer can move users and settings, games and saves, screenshots, and video clips. The instructions are documented on a PlayStation Support page localized for India; menu steps below follow that page.

- Update both PS4 consoles and sign in with the same account.
- Connect the consoles through the same router, wired or wireless. For the wireless route, Sony also calls for an Ethernet cable connecting the two consoles.
- On the receiving PS4, open Settings > System > Transfer Data from Another PS4 and follow the on-screen prompts.
Important: Sony says the transfer deletes data on the receiving PS4. Check that console for anything you need before beginning. Do not switch off either console during the process. See Sony’s PS4 transfer instructions.
Get digital and disc games on the destination console
Digital games
A digital purchase is associated with the account that owns it; it is not a game file or license that you move to a different account. Sign in to the destination console using the purchasing account, open Game Library, and download the game. This restores access to eligible purchases but does not by itself transfer saved progress.

Disc games
Insert the disc into a compatible console to install or play the game. The disc must remain available for play where required, and the destination console must be able to read it. A PS4 disc cannot be used in PS5 Digital Edition, and PS5 does not support PS3 discs. Some eligible PS4 disc games offer a PS5 upgrade, but the original disc must stay inserted to play the upgraded digital game. Compatibility and upgrade availability vary by game; check Sony’s Games Support guidance.
Move saved progress separately when needed
Game installation and saved progress are separate. The PS5 Data Transfer process can include supported saves, but a game’s compatibility and save-migration rules determine whether progress carries over. If you use another route, choose one that matches the save’s original console.

PS4 saves
- Console transfer: Include eligible saves in a supported PS4-to-PS5 transfer, or use the PS4-to-PS4 transfer.
- USB drive: Copy PS4 saved data to USB using the PS4 saved-data controls, then copy it to the destination as supported. Sony’s storage guidance covers PS4 save USB transfer and PS5 storage management.
- PlayStation Plus cloud storage: Upload and download PS4 saves with an eligible membership. On PS5, PS4 saves downloaded from cloud storage require a manual download to the console.
PS5 saves
PS5 saves can move through the supported PS5 console-transfer or PlayStation Plus cloud-storage routes. Sony does not support copying PS5 console saved data directly to USB. Cloud storage requires PlayStation Plus; Sony’s Canada support page lists a capacity of 100 GB for PS5 saved data and 100 GB for PS4 saved data, with a maximum of 1,000 PS4 saved-data files. A PS4 USB extended-storage drive can be connected to a PS5 to access game data. PS5 also supports USB extended storage and an M.2 SSD as game-storage options. These are storage routes for game data, not a general way to migrate saved progress; handle saves using the console, USB-save, or cloud options described above.
