To update The Sims 4 automatically, open the EA app’s Download settings and turn on both Update games automatically and Enable background downloads. To check for an update manually, open the game from your Library and view its Game Hub.

Open the EA app and sign in if prompted.

Open settings: on PC, select the three-line menu at the top left and choose Application settings. On Mac, select EA app in the menu bar beside the Apple symbol, then choose Settings.

Under Updates, switch on Update games automatically and Enable background downloads. The second setting allows queued games to download while the EA app is closed. EA app download settings
Check The Sims 4 for an update
In the EA app, open Library and select The Sims 4. Its Game Hub is where EA says players can download or buy a game and view information about it. If an update is waiting, check the Hub for the available update action. EA app download settings

Troubleshoot an update that will not start
“An update is required to launch this game”
Close any running Sims 4 process, then try launching the game again. On PC, use Task Manager; on Mac, use the force-quit window. EA says to report an error if this does not resolve the problem. EA guidance for an update-required launch
Stuck at a percentage or “Waiting for download”
Clear the EA app cache through App recovery. On Windows 10 or 11, you can also use Start > All Apps > EA > App Recovery > Clear Cache. Cache clearing may help with stalled downloads, but it cannot resolve an outage or server downtime; if the problem continues, check EA server status. EA guidance for clearing the app cache

The game launches but has file or stability problems
Use Library > The Sims 4 > Manage > Repair. Repair is a troubleshooting option for game files or stability, not the regular way to request an update. EA guidance for repairing a game

EA disables Mods during an update because a Mod that worked before a patch may no longer be compatible. First launch the game with Mods disabled and confirm it works. Check each Mod creator for compatibility information or an updated version.

When testing, exit the game without saving before restoring Custom Content and Mods. EA warns that saving and exiting before restoring them may remove content from a save.
