To stop a game launcher from opening when you sign in to Windows, turn off its own startup setting or disable it in Windows startup apps. This prevents automatic launch; it does not necessarily let you start a game without its launcher.
Stop a launcher from starting with Windows
Windows offers two built-in ways to control apps that open when you sign in. Use either method; you do not need a third-party utility.
Settings
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Startup.
- Find the launcher and switch it off.
Microsoft says this setting prevents the selected app from starting automatically when you sign in. If the launcher is not listed, check its own settings first. Microsoft also documents checking the user or shared Startup folder for apps that do not appear in the list. See Microsoft’s Windows startup-app instructions.
Task Manager
- Open Task Manager. You can press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Select the launcher, then choose Disable. In some versions of Windows, you can right-click the app and choose Disable.
Task Manager also shows startup impact information. Avoid editing the registry as a first step: Microsoft warns that registry changes can have unintended consequences and recommends backing up the registry before making changes.

Turn off Steam startup
- Open Steam.
- Choose Steam > Settings > Interface.
- Clear Run Steam when my computer starts.
These are the menu names in Steam Support’s startup instructions. The FAQ does not identify a client version, so labels may change in a later update.
Turn off Epic Games Launcher startup
Epic documents two options:
Use the launcher setting
- Open the Epic Games Launcher and select the player/profile icon in the upper-right.
- Choose Settings.
- Under Preferences, clear Run When My Computer Starts.
Use Windows Task Manager
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Open Startup apps.
- Right-click EpicGamesLauncher and select Disable.
Both methods are listed by Epic Games Support. Epic also notes that repeated password prompts can be related to internet connection problems. If that applies, its suggested workaround is to start the launcher manually after the computer has connected to the internet; that advice is specific to Epic’s sign-in issue, not a general startup fix for every launcher. Does turning off startup let you play without the launcher?
No. Disabling startup only stops the launcher from opening automatically when you sign in. A particular game may still require its launcher to start, authenticate, or run in the background.
For example, EA says some EA games bought through Steam may still need the EA app. Check the individual game’s Steam store listing: EA says a third-party DRM banner indicates that EA online activation and EA app installation/background use are required. EA’s download and play guidance also explains that offline play is limited to games that do not require an internet connection, and the game must have been launched online at least once. Offline mode is not a universal way to bypass a required launcher.

Startup controls and menu labels can vary by launcher and operating system. Current exact startup paths for EA app, Ubisoft Connect, Rockstar Games Launcher, and macOS are not established here. Check the relevant launcher’s current settings or your operating system’s startup-app controls rather than assuming Steam or Epic’s menu names apply.
