How to buy a unit with Gold
- Select the city where you want the unit to appear.
- Open the city’s Purchase menu. Depending on your platform and interface, this may appear as a tab or an option alongside the city’s production choices.
- Check the units available for Gold and their displayed prices.
- Select the unit and confirm if the game prompts you.
The purchase creates the unit immediately. It does not normally cancel the city’s current production: the city carries on with its existing item unless you change it or it cannot continue. The manual illustrates this with a city producing an Archer with four turns left; buying another Archer makes the purchased one available at once while the original continues to be produced. The manual explains the menu generally, but does not establish button mappings for every PC, console, or mobile interface.
What to check if a unit is unavailable
Gold by itself does not guarantee that every unit can be purchased in every city. Some units have strategic-resource requirements, and certain units are subject to district conditions. Under the Standard Rules described by the Civilopedia, improving two copies of the required resource lets the relevant units be built or purchased in any city, even one without the otherwise appropriate district. Check the unit’s requirements and the city’s listed purchase options before concluding that the price is the only restriction. [Civilopedia: Resources]
Should you buy the unit or produce it?
Buying is useful when getting a unit immediately matters more than keeping the Gold for another use. Before spending, weigh the urgency of the unit against the city’s production time, your Gold reserve after expected upkeep, and any resource or district requirements. These factors vary by game, so there is no universal rule that buying is better than producing.

Gold can also buy buildings and tiles, upgrade obsolete units, and support diplomacy. Units and buildings carry maintenance costs paid each turn, so account for the ongoing expense as well as the upfront purchase. [Civilopedia: Spending Gold]
Where Gold comes from
Gold can come from several parts of your empire and your dealings with other players: working city tiles, improvements, trade routes, districts and buildings, city-states, pillaging, capturing cities, and diplomacy. [Civilopedia: Obtaining Gold]
