In Minecraft Java Edition, first confirm that you launched the intended modded profile, then check the active loader’s mod list and that instance’s logs/latest.log. A mod appearing in the list or log means the loader recognized it—not necessarily that every feature works. To verify behavior, test the specific feature and investigate any warnings, errors, dependencies, or conflicts.
How to check whether a mod loaded
- Select the intended installation. In your launcher, choose the profile or instance configured for the Minecraft version and mod loader you expect. Start the game and confirm it is not running a vanilla profile.
- Check the loader’s mod information. Open the loader’s installed-mod list or status screen, if available, and look for the expected mod. Exact menu labels vary by loader and version. Forge uses mod metadata to control information shown in its Mods menu and how a mod loads.
- Inspect the log from that run. Find
logs/latest.login the game directory for the instance you just launched. Search for the mod’s name or ID, loader startup output, dependency warnings, and errors around startup. NeoForge support identifieslatest.logas an important source of Forge and mod informational output;debug.logincludes that output plus debug-level details. See NeoForge troubleshooting documentation. - Test the feature you care about. Use the item, block, command, setting, or other feature the mod is meant to add. A listed mod or startup entry confirms recognition, not that a particular feature is functioning.
What the mod list and log can—and cannot—tell you
These checks answer different questions. The loader’s mod information and startup log can show whether the loader recognized a mod. Testing its specific feature checks whether the behavior you want works in your game. A mod can be recognized yet still have a problem caused by a missing dependency, configuration, or conflict with another mod; there is no universal in-game test that proves every feature of every mod works.
Fabric’s documentation explains where to find and share logs: the official launcher uses the game directory’s logs folder, where the newest log is named latest.log. Third-party launchers may store logs in separate instance folders, so use the launcher’s own instructions to locate the log for the run that failed. See Fabric’s guide to locating and sharing logs.
If a mod is missing or its feature fails
The mod does not appear in the loader’s list
- Confirm the game launched with the expected loader and profile, not vanilla or a different modded installation.
- Check that the mod file is in the active instance’s
modsdirectory. A file in another profile’s folder will not be loaded by the instance you launched. - Verify that the download matches both your Minecraft version and loader. Fabric’s installation guidance says to select mods for the Minecraft version and loader in use: Fabric mod installation.
- Check the mod’s documentation for required dependencies. Many Fabric mods require Fabric API; the log may also report a missing dependency.
The mod is listed, but the feature does not work
- Search the startup log for warnings or errors associated with the mod or its dependencies.
- Review the mod’s own compatibility notes and configuration. Some features may need to be enabled or configured rather than appearing automatically.
- Temporarily remove other mods to see whether a conflict is involved, changing one thing at a time. CurseForge’s troubleshooting guide recommends checking logs and temporarily removing mods when diagnosing problems: CurseForge Minecraft troubleshooting.
What to include when asking for help
Share the latest.log from the failing run, not a log from a different session. Include your Minecraft version, loader and loader version, launcher, affected mod, and a brief description of the feature that failed. Fabric’s log guide covers locating and sharing the file: Fabric’s guide to locating and sharing logs.

Scope: Java mods versus Bedrock add-ons
This procedure is for Java Edition mods and mod loaders. Bedrock add-ons use a different system, so Java loader menus, folders, and log instructions do not apply. Minecraft Help says Minecraft Support cannot assist with issues arising from Java mod usage because modding is not officially supported: Minecraft Help. For Bedrock issues, follow the relevant add-on guidance instead.
