How to Retrieve and Redeem a Gifted Xbox Game

Check the Xbox account’s Messages area and the email address linked to it: Xbox says it sends a digital game gift to both. Open the gift and choose Redeem code. If you have a code instead, redeem it while signed in to the Microsoft account that should own the game.

Where to find an Xbox game someone gifted you

1. Check Xbox messages. Sign in to the Xbox account the sender addressed and look in its Messages or chat area for the gift notice. Xbox says the recipient receives a console message as well as an email. Xbox’s gifting guide describes both delivery routes.
2. Check the linked email inbox. Search the email address associated with that Xbox account, including spam, junk, and other filtered folders.
3. Open the gift and redeem it. Select Redeem code in the message or email and follow the prompts. You do not need a separate code from the sender if the gift notice provides this redemption action.

How to redeem a gifted Xbox code

If the sender gave you a code rather than a clickable gift notice, use Microsoft’s code redemption instructions. Sign in to the Microsoft account and Gamertag that should receive the game, then enter or paste the code and follow the prompts. Account choice matters: redeeming while signed in to a different account may put the entitlement on the wrong account.

If redemption in the Xbox app or console does not work, go to microsoft.com/redeem, sign in to the intended account, enter the code, and follow the on-screen steps. Microsoft lists the web redemption flow as a troubleshooting option in its transaction error guidance.

If the gift message or email is missing

• Confirm you are signed in to the Xbox account the sender selected, then check its Messages area.
• Search the inbox associated with that account, including spam, junk, and filtered folders.
• Ask the sender to verify the email address or Xbox identity used for the gift and check the purchase. If it still cannot be found, the sender or recipient can contact Microsoft Support. The official guidance does not specify a delivery time or guarantee a particular resend process.

If the code will not redeem

• Check that you are signed in to the Microsoft account intended to own the game, then try the web redemption route.
• If Microsoft reports that a code is invalid or already used, verify the code with the sender. Microsoft advises taking an incorrect code purchased from a retailer back to that retailer; for other unresolved redemption problems, use Microsoft Support.
• Check the region. Xbox’s current gifting guide says the sender and recipient should be in the same country. An older Xbox policy states that a gift can be redeemed only in the country or region where it was purchased; use the current same-country guidance as the primary rule. Xbox’s earlier gifting policy provides the country-or-region detail.

If you redeemed the game on the wrong account or have a question about who owns a redeemed entitlement, contact Microsoft Support. The available redemption guidance does not establish a general way to transfer a game between accounts.
