There is no universal operating-system switch established here that can force every game to keep simulating after it loses focus.
Also distinguish between a game continuing to run and its window staying visible behind other apps. Those are separate behaviors, and changing display mode may affect visibility or minimizing without keeping gameplay active.
What does “tabbed out” mean?
On a PC, tabbing out usually means switching focus to another window or app, often with Alt+Tab. That is not necessarily the same as minimizing the game. A game can keep running while unfocused, pause its simulation, keep playing audio, or remain visible behind another window; the exact behavior is game-dependent.
If you only want the game window to remain visible, look for a windowed or fullscreen-windowed display mode. If you want gameplay to continue—such as a simulation advancing—you need a game setting or build that allows background execution. One does not guarantee the other.

How to check as a player
- Open the game’s settings. Check Gameplay, General, Display, or similar sections for “pause when unfocused,” “pause on focus loss,” “run in background,” or a related option. The exact menu path and label vary by title.
- Set the option according to your goal. Disable a pause-on-focus-loss option, or enable a run-in-background option, if the game provides one. Then switch to another window and check whether the game simulation continues.
- If you only need the window visible, try Windowed or Fullscreen Windowed mode rather than Exclusive Fullscreen. This may change what happens to the window when you switch apps; it does not necessarily make the game keep simulating.
- If no relevant option exists, consult the game’s official support or settings documentation. A player may not be able to override a game that is designed to pause when unfocused.
Why display mode may not keep gameplay running
Unity documents a Windows-specific distinction: its visibleInBackground setting can keep a game window visible behind other windows in Fullscreen Windowed mode, but it has no effect in Exclusive Fullscreen, which always minimizes. Unity also notes that pressing Windows+D still minimizes the app. This setting concerns visibility, not whether gameplay simulation continues. Unity’s Player Settings documentation describes the behavior.
When the game is built with Unity
Unity provides developers with an Application.runInBackground property that determines whether a player runs in the background. Unity says it is false by default, so the application pauses when it is in the background. This is a setting for the game’s build, not a general switch available to players for every installed game. Unity’s current scripting reference explains the property.

Unity’s 2022.3 documentation also describes the developer-facing PlayerSettings.runInBackground setting as allowing a game to continue after losing focus. The relevant setting and behavior depend on the engine version and how the developer configured the game. Unity 2022.3’s reference documents that setting.
Web and mobile games have additional limits
For Unity Web players, the current Unity 6.0.6 documentation says the background update loop runs at approximately one update per second. That is a platform behavior statement, not a guarantee that every browser or game will continue running at that rate. Unity also notes that mobile browsers might pause an application when the screen locks. On Android, the property works only while the app remains visible, such as in multi-window; it pauses when actually backgrounded. iOS ignores the property. Unity’s documentation describes these platform differences.

On iOS, desktop advice does not apply: Apple says an app that leaves the foreground moves briefly to the background before UIKit suspends it, and recommends pausing gameplay on deactivation. Apple’s UIKit guidance covers the transition.
Apple’s macOS guidance about background processes concerns app processes and user control, including Dock indicators and System Settings. It does not provide a generic switch to keep an arbitrary game’s gameplay simulation running. Apple’s background-process documentation explains the distinction.

What information is needed for a game-specific answer?
The right steps depend on the game, operating system or device, and whether “running” means the simulation continues, audio keeps playing, or the window remains visible. Share the game title and platform to narrow the answer to a verified setting or support path.
