On Steam, the simplest way to install a Witcher 3 mod is through Steam Workshop: open the game’s Workshop, choose a compatible mod, select Subscribe, let Steam download it, then launch the game. You can also use Nexus Mods, but that is a separate download-and-install process: follow the chosen mod author’s instructions for where its files belong.
Install a mod through Steam Workshop

Open The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Steam Workshop and browse for a mod.

Before subscribing, read the mod’s description for its requirements, compatible game version, conflicts, and any additional installation notes. Mod availability and compatibility vary by listing.

Select Subscribe on the mod’s Workshop page. Steam will download it; when the download is complete, launch The Witcher 3.

These are the Steam Workshop steps described in CD PROJEKT RED’s modding guidance. A mod manager is not required for this route.
Install a Nexus Mods download on the Steam version
You can use a Nexus Mods file with the Steam game, but downloading it does not automatically install it. The author’s instructions determine what to do with the files. Download the mod, check its requirements and installation notes, and put its files in the folder or folders the author specifies. There is no single folder recipe that applies to every Witcher 3 mod.
If you prefer a manager, The Witcher 3 Mod Manager describes features for installing and organizing mods, including enabling or disabling them and viewing load order. Follow the manager’s own current instructions rather than assuming every mod uses the same workflow.

Do you need REDkit to play mods?
No. CD PROJEKT RED describes REDkit primarily as a toolkit for creating mods; it is not required to play user-created content. The publisher’s REDkit installation tutorial, published May 21, 2024, describes REDkit as free for owners of the PC game, but that does not make it a prerequisite for installing or using mods.

Choose the installation channel that fits the mod

Confirm that you installed any prerequisites the mod author lists.

For a manually downloaded mod, check that the files are in the location specified by its author.

If you use Vortex, note that its Witcher 3 guidance says files installed manually may not be known to or managed by Vortex. Avoid installing the same mod both manually and through a manager unless the manager’s instructions explain how to handle that setup.
What to know about community mods
CD PROJEKT RED says community-created mod content is not reviewed by the publisher. That means its review should not be treated as a guarantee of a mod’s quality, safety, or compatibility. Read the mod author’s requirements and installation notes before using it.
