If you mean that your Mana bar is empty, restore current Mana with an item, skill, or sleep. If part of the pool is burnt, use a burnt-Mana remedy or cast spells; sleep does not clear burnt Mana.
First, identify which Mana problem you have
Outward distinguishes maximum Mana capacity from current Mana and burnt Mana. Capacity is the character’s total unlocked pool. Current Mana is what remains available to spend. Burnt Mana reduces the amount of that pool you can use until it is recovered.

- Maximum Mana is too low: visit a Ley Line to sacrifice more Health and Stamina, or use a capacity-increasing effect.
- Current Mana is depleted: use a Mana-restoration item or skill, or sleep. Sleep restores current Mana only up to the limit imposed by burnt Mana.
- Mana is burnt: use an item that restores burnt Mana or cast spells, which recover a small amount. Sleeping burns Mana rather than clearing it.
The Outward Wiki’s Mana page lists the game values and methods below. It is community-maintained and does not specify an applicable game version, so treat the figures as listed values rather than version-specific guarantees.
How to increase maximum Mana
Sacrifice Health and Stamina at a Ley Line
Mana is unlocked at a Ley Line. Each exchange grants 20 maximum Mana at the cost of 5 Health and 5 Stamina. You can return later to sacrifice more and increase your capacity again. The tradeoff is permanent character progression in exchange for a larger Mana pool; see the wiki’s pages on Health and Stamina for those resources.
#1 Best Overall
- Survive in the wilds as you explore the land
- Play solo or cooperatively online
- Dynamic defeat scenarios react to your context
- Constant auto-saving means there’s no turning back
- Ritualistic, step-by-step approach to spellcasting
Use capacity-increasing skills or effects
The Mana page lists these additional maximum-Mana increases:
| Skill or effect | Listed maximum-Mana increase |
|---|---|
| Ancestors’ Memories | +25 |
| Peacemaker Elixir | +20 |
| Spellblade’s Awakening | +15 |
| Well of Mana | +40 |
These are values listed on the community wiki; check the in-game skill or effect description for your version before planning around them.
Restore current Mana without increasing capacity
If the maximum pool is already large enough but the bar is low, the wiki lists these consumables and skills for restoring current Mana:
Rank #2
- Survive in the wilds as you explore the lands
- Play solo or cooperatively, locally or online
- Dynamic defeat scenarios that react to your context
- Constant auto-saving means there's no turning back
- Ritualistic, step-by-step approach to spellcasting.Unique experience at every playthrough
- Astral Potion
- Crystal Powder
- Gep’s Drink
- Great Astral Potion
- Luxe Lichette
- Mana Spark
- Leyline Connection
Sleep also replenishes current Mana, but only up to the burnt-Mana limit. It is therefore useful for ordinary depletion, not for removing the burnt portion.
Recover burnt Mana
Burnt Mana is not simply an empty bar: it shrinks the pool you can currently use. The Mana page lists Astral Potion, Crystal Powder, Cured Pypherfish, Great Astral Potion, Grilled Pypherfish, Horror’s Potion, Iced Tea, and Soothing Tea as options for burnt Mana. Casting spells also restores a small amount.
Some items restore both current and burnt Mana, but their listed amounts differ:
Rank #3
- The player is adventurer, traveler, explorer and most importantly - vulnerable and mortal
- Constant auto-saving means you have to live with your decisions
- High replay value: a unique experience with every passage of the game
- The Definitive Edition includes all DLCs and various "Qualtiy of Life" improvements in addition to the game
| Item | Current Mana restored | Burnt Mana restored |
|---|---|---|
| Astral Potion | 50% | 20 |
| Great Astral Potion | 100% | 20 |
| Crystal Powder | 25% | 50 |
These are the game values listed on the Mana page. The percentages describe current-Mana restoration; burnt-Mana recovery is shown as a flat amount.
Why sleeping can make the problem worse
Sleep restores current Mana only as far as the burnt-Mana limit allows, and sleep itself burns 5% of maximum Mana per hour, up to a maximum of 50% burnt Mana. If your usable pool has shrunk because Mana is burnt, sleeping is not the remedy for that loss; use a burnt-Mana item or cast spells to recover it.
