Open the person’s profile from your Xbox friends list or in the Xbox app and check the presence label. It may show that they are offline or when they were last seen. Treat that label as a clue about the status Xbox currently displays—not a guaranteed, exact record of their activity.
Check their status on Xbox
You can look from a console or the Xbox app. Use whichever interface makes it easiest to find the person’s profile; there is no evidence that one route provides a more accurate status than the other.
On a console
- Open your friends list.
- Select the person to open their profile.
- Look for the presence or activity label, such as an offline or Last seen status. Labels and their placement can vary by interface.
In the Xbox app
- Open your friends list in the Xbox app.
- Select the person’s profile.
- Check the presence or activity label shown there.

What “Last seen” can—and cannot—tell you
Last Seen is a presence clue, not proof of exactly when someone last used a console or whether they are playing right now. The available sources do not establish an accuracy guarantee, a universal refresh interval, or every reason a status might appear stale. If the label seems out of date, check again later and treat it as the status currently shown.

Why someone online might appear offline
A person can choose Appear offline, and their privacy settings may affect what other people see. A Microsoft Community reply points users toward Xbox privacy settings for Online status & history, using the general route Xbox privacy → View details & customize → Online status & history. This is community guidance, not a guaranteed current menu sequence, so the labels or route may differ.
That means an offline or Last Seen label does not prove that the person has not been using Xbox. Microsoft Community’s June 4, 2025 thread raises the related question of why an online user might still show as Last Seen; its response is from an Independent Advisor, not an official product specification. If the status does not make sense
- Reopen the person’s profile later and check the label again.
- Remember that privacy choices can change what others see.
- Do not treat a displayed time or label as conclusive evidence of current play or exact past activity.
