Start with the fix for your platform: on PC, check compatibility and drivers, temporarily disable Creations, verify the Steam files, remove custom launch options, and update DirectX. On Xbox or PlayStation, Bethesda’s cited steps apply specifically when the game stops launching or loading after you enable many mods—not to every startup problem.
First, identify your platform and what changed
Fallout 4 has no single confirmed fix for every launch failure. Bethesda’s PC guidance covers startup crashes generally; its console guidance addresses launch or loading trouble after activating many mods. Follow the branch that matches your situation rather than applying console storage steps to a PC problem or deleting data as a first move.

Fix Fallout 4 not opening on PC
Bethesda recommends the following PC checks. Try them in order, launching the game again after each change so you can tell whether it helped.
- Check system requirements and graphics drivers. Confirm your PC meets Fallout 4’s system requirements and install a current driver for your graphics card. Bethesda notes that performance problems are often hardware-related; this is a compatibility check, not a recommendation to buy new hardware. See Bethesda’s PC startup-crash guidance.
- Temporarily disable or remove installed Creations. Bethesda recommends testing the game without them to rule out a Creation-related issue. If you use Fallout 4 Anniversary Edition or the Creations Bundle, disabling or deleting Creations through the game menu does not remove the Creations Bundle DLC included with those products.
- Verify the Steam game files. In Steam, open Library, right-click Fallout 4, select Properties → Installed Files, then choose Verify integrity of game files… Bethesda says the check may take several minutes. It also cautions: “One or more files may fail to verify, in most cases this is normal. These are local configuration files and should not be altered in this process.” Don’t edit or delete local configuration files just because verification flags them.
- Clear custom Steam launch options. In the game’s Properties, open General and remove any text in Launch Options, then try starting the game again. Bethesda warns that some launch options can cause crashes.
- Check DirectX. Bethesda recommends ensuring the latest DirectX version is installed. Use the Microsoft support link provided from Bethesda’s startup-crash article, rather than downloading DirectX or drivers from an unofficial site.
If those steps do not resolve the issue, Bethesda points players to its official Discord for further assistance. When asking for help, include your platform, what happens when you press Play, and which steps you have already tried. Steam also has a general guide for games that fail after “Preparing to Launch”; Steam describes extracted game-file corruption as a common cause, but that guidance is not specific to Fallout 4.

Fix console launch trouble after enabling many mods
Bethesda’s console procedure is for trouble loading or launching after activating many mods. Its advice differs by console:
Xbox: clear reserved space, not your save
- Open My games & apps and highlight Fallout 4.
- Open Manage game.
- Highlight Reserved space, open the menu, and choose Delete reserved space.
Bethesda explicitly warns not to delete your current save. If reserved space does not clear, its guidance suggests power-cycling the console and trying again. Read the Bethesda console instructions before proceeding.
PlayStation: reinstall the complete game
For the same many-mod launch or loading scenario, Bethesda advises uninstalling and reinstalling the complete game. This is not presented as a universal first step for all PlayStation launch failures. Consult the console troubleshooting page for Bethesda’s full guidance.
How to avoid repeating a many-mod console problem
Bethesda advises against downloading too many new mods at once and warns that problems can occur beyond 10. That is support guidance, not a measured failure threshold; the page does not establish a guaranteed safe number. Add mods cautiously so a new problem is easier to associate with a recent change.

Bethesda’s support pages provide troubleshooting actions, not success rates, and the pages retrieved do not state their publication or revision dates or identify the exact Fallout 4 build covered. Treat these as Bethesda’s current support guidance retrieved on October 8, 2026, rather than version-specific patch notes.
