Join a server in Java Edition
- Launch Minecraft and select Multiplayer.
- For a one-time connection, select Direct Connection and enter the server address. To keep the server in your list, select Add Server, enter a server name and address, then save.
- Select the server and choose Join Server.
Minecraft describes a Java server address as an IP address or URL. Get the address and any non-default connection details from the server owner or administrator. Use a client version compatible with the server; Minecraft’s joining guide warns that the versions need to match.
Join a server in Bedrock Edition
- Select Play, then open the Servers tab.
- On a computer or mobile device, choose Add Server.
- Enter a server name and address, then enter the port if the server requires one. Minecraft lists 19132 as the default Bedrock port.
- Choose Add and play to connect immediately, or save the server entry and join later.
Bedrock consoles are limited to featured servers in the cited manual-add flow; the help article does not provide a way to modify the server list there. Account and platform requirements may also affect multiplayer access.

Check compatibility before troubleshooting connection errors
- Edition: Use Java Edition for a Java server and Bedrock Edition for a Bedrock server. They use different servers and do not directly join each other’s edition-specific servers. See Minecraft’s Java or Bedrock Edition guide.
- Address and port: Copy the exact address and custom port from the server owner. Do not assume a custom port can be left blank; 19132 is Minecraft’s stated default for Bedrock.
- Game version: A Java client may fail to connect if its version is incompatible with the server’s version.
- Connection and account access: Minecraft lists a stable internet or LAN connection among multiplayer requirements. Console multiplayer may also require a platform subscription; check the multiplayer requirements.
If you do not have a server address
Minecraft points players to its official server listing; Bedrock players can also browse featured servers from the in-game Servers tab. You need the server’s address and any custom port to enter a private or otherwise unlisted server.

Entering a port to join someone else’s server is a client-side step. You do not need to buy server hardware or configure a router just to join. Hosting your own server is separate: Minecraft provides distinct Java and Bedrock server software and notes that hosting may require network or firewall configuration on its server download page.
