Enter the server’s address and port in the multiplayer menu for your Minecraft edition. In Java Edition, use Multiplayer → Direct Connection to join now or Add Server to save it. In Bedrock Edition on computer or mobile, use Play → Servers → Add Server and fill in the address and port. Ask the server owner for the exact connection details; Minecraft lists 19132 as Bedrock’s default port.

Where to enter the server address and port

Edition and platform Menu path Address and port Save or join
Java Edition Multiplayer → Direct Connection or Add Server Enter the server address; use the exact connection details given by the server owner. Direct Connection joins now; Add Server saves it to the list.
Bedrock Edition on computer or mobile Play → Servers → Add Server Enter the server name, address, and port if required. Minecraft lists 19132 as the default Bedrock port. Choose Add and play to connect, or save the entry to join later.
Bedrock Edition on console Servers tab The manual Add Server flow described in Minecraft’s help article is not supported on consoles. Use the featured servers available in the tab.

The menus and port guidance are described in Minecraft’s Java multiplayer help and Bedrock multiplayer help.

Join a server in Java Edition

  1. Launch Minecraft and select Multiplayer.
  2. For a one-time connection, select Direct Connection and enter the server address. To keep the server in your list, select Add Server, enter a server name and address, then save.
  3. Select the server and choose Join Server.

Minecraft describes a Java server address as an IP address or URL. Get the address and any non-default connection details from the server owner or administrator. Use a client version compatible with the server; Minecraft’s joining guide warns that the versions need to match.

Join a server in Bedrock Edition

  1. Select Play, then open the Servers tab.
  2. On a computer or mobile device, choose Add Server.
  3. Enter a server name and address, then enter the port if the server requires one. Minecraft lists 19132 as the default Bedrock port.
  4. Choose Add and play to connect immediately, or save the server entry and join later.

Bedrock consoles are limited to featured servers in the cited manual-add flow; the help article does not provide a way to modify the server list there. Account and platform requirements may also affect multiplayer access.

Check compatibility before troubleshooting connection errors

  • Edition: Use Java Edition for a Java server and Bedrock Edition for a Bedrock server. They use different servers and do not directly join each other’s edition-specific servers. See Minecraft’s Java or Bedrock Edition guide.
  • Address and port: Copy the exact address and custom port from the server owner. Do not assume a custom port can be left blank; 19132 is Minecraft’s stated default for Bedrock.
  • Game version: A Java client may fail to connect if its version is incompatible with the server’s version.
  • Connection and account access: Minecraft lists a stable internet or LAN connection among multiplayer requirements. Console multiplayer may also require a platform subscription; check the multiplayer requirements.

If you do not have a server address

Minecraft points players to its official server listing; Bedrock players can also browse featured servers from the in-game Servers tab. You need the server’s address and any custom port to enter a private or otherwise unlisted server.

Joining is different from hosting

Entering a port to join someone else’s server is a client-side step. You do not need to buy server hardware or configure a router just to join. Hosting your own server is separate: Minecraft provides distinct Java and Bedrock server software and notes that hosting may require network or firewall configuration on its server download page.
