How Do I Fix Forge Exit Code 1?

Forge Exit Code 1 is a crash symptom, not a diagnosis. Use logs, a clean Forge profile, and version checks to find the cause.

Forge Exit Code 1 means Minecraft crashed; it does not identify the cause. The fastest way to narrow it down is to save the logs, test a clean Forge profile without mods, compare it with vanilla Minecraft, then check version-specific Java settings and installation or graphics issues.

What Forge Exit Code 1 means

The code is a symptom, not a diagnosis. A Minecraft Forge support community manager summarized it plainly: “Exit code 1 means the game crashed.” The cause could be a mod, a Forge and Minecraft version mismatch, Java configuration, the game installation, or a graphics or driver issue. Without your version details and logs, no single cause can be identified.

Start by recording your Minecraft version, Forge version, launcher, operating system, and whether vanilla Minecraft launches. Keep the latest crash report and debug.log. If there is no crash report and the log does not show a useful error, collect launcher_log.txt as well. Forge support requests these records to diagnose a crash: Forge forum support thread.

Isolate whether the problem is Forge or a mod

Create a separate, clean Forge profile for the same Minecraft version and launch it with no mods. Do not delete a working world or the entire game directory as an initial troubleshooting step. CurseForge recommends a clean-profile test; if it still crashes, the issue is more likely tied to the modloader or game than to an installed mod: CurseForge’s Exit Code 1 guidance.

Vanilla launches; clean Forge does not Check the Minecraft and Forge version pairing, the Java executable selected by the launcher, and graphics drivers. Use the crash report and logs to narrow down which branch applies.
Clean Forge launches; the modded profile does not Check that each mod supports your Minecraft version and loader. Reintroduce mods in small groups, launching between groups, to isolate a conflict. This is a practical extension of the clean-profile test, not a guaranteed fix.
Vanilla and multiple Forge profiles fail Look beyond an individual mod: inspect the logs, consider repairing the installation, and check graphics drivers through the GPU manufacturer’s website.

Check the Minecraft, Forge, and Java versions

Make sure the Forge build is intended for the exact Minecraft release you are launching. Also confirm which Java executable the launcher actually uses; having a suitable Java installation on the computer is not enough if the profile points to a different executable.

Java requirements depend on the Minecraft version. For example, Forge forum support states that Minecraft 1.18.2 needs Java 17. That is a version-specific example, not a rule to apply to every Minecraft release. CurseForge’s Forge installation guidance covers selecting a Java executable and updating or reinstalling Java when relevant: Issues Related to the Forge Modloader.

Repair the installation or check graphics drivers

If several profiles or modpacks crash, CurseForge recommends repairing the installation and checking for graphics-driver updates on the hardware manufacturer’s website. These are troubleshooting options, not guaranteed fixes. A Forge support discussion includes an individual native crash involving a graphics-related DLL, but that case does not establish graphics as the cause of every Exit Code 1 failure: Forge forum crash discussion.

Choose the right next step from the failure point

  • Forge fails during installation through CurseForge: Follow the installation troubleshooting for app repair, network interference, Java selection, or manual installation in CurseForge’s Forge modloader guide. An install-command failure is different from a crash when launching a game profile.
  • The game crashes as it launches: Compare vanilla and clean Forge, then inspect the crash report and debug.log.
  • The game crashes while loading mods: Verify each mod’s Minecraft and loader compatibility, then isolate the set by adding mods back in small groups.
  • The log shows a native JVM crash or a problematic frame: Include that report when asking for help; do not assume that reinstalling Forge, Minecraft, or Java will address a failure the log points elsewhere. Individual Forge and GitHub reports illustrate particular cases, not how frequently each cause occurs.

If the problem remains, share the Minecraft and Forge versions, launcher and operating system, the steps that reproduce the crash, and the relevant crash report and logs with Forge or CurseForge support. A useful report lets support distinguish an installation failure from a game launch crash and see what failed before the launcher displayed Exit Code 1.
