Update Minecraft Education through the same place it was installed: the Windows app, Microsoft Store, managed Google Play Store, or Apple App Store. On Mac, download and install the latest version from the official Minecraft Education download page. Back up your worlds before any manual uninstall and reinstall, because uninstalling can delete them.
Choose the update path for your device
Minecraft Education updates differently depending on the platform and installation method. Use the route that matches your app:

How do I update Minecraft Education on Windows?
Windows desktop app
The desktop app checks for updates when someone logs in to the computer. If it does not update, the school or other organization may restrict automatic updates, or the network may block downloads.minecrafteduservices.com. Contact the device administrator if the computer is managed; do not assume that reinstalling is necessary before checking for those restrictions. The update steps are described in Minecraft Education Support.
Windows Store app
When Microsoft Store makes an update available, it sends a notification. To manage automatic updates, open Microsoft Store settings and adjust the automatic app-update option there. If the device is managed by a school, its policy may limit what you can change.

How do I update it on Chromebook or iPad?
Chromebook
Updates are handled through the managed Google Play Store. On a school Chromebook, the administrator may determine whether and when apps update, so ask them if Minecraft Education remains on an older version or the update controls are unavailable.
iPad
Use the App Store to manage Minecraft Education updates and automatic updates. The app’s update availability and automatic-update behavior are controlled through the App Store rather than Minecraft Education’s in-game settings.

How do I update Minecraft Education on Mac?
The official instructions direct Mac users to update manually from the official download page. Before removing an installed version, back up your worlds. Then follow the manual reinstall procedure below.
Manual update: protect worlds before reinstalling
A manual update means uninstalling the current app and installing the latest download. Minecraft Education Support warns that uninstalling during a manual update may delete worlds. Back up worlds before you begin; worlds are not deleted during automatic updates, according to the official support instructions.

- Back up the worlds you want to keep before uninstalling Minecraft Education.
- Uninstall the current version from the device.
- Download the latest release from the official Minecraft Education download page.
- Install the downloaded version and check that your backed-up worlds are available.
Check the installed version
The installed version number appears at the lower-right edge of the Minecraft Education home screen. Compare it with the current version on the download page and in the change log. The labels can differ: on October 8, 2026, the download page listed version 1.26.32, while the change log identified the August 5, 2026 client release as version 26.32. The change log says versioning changed to a format beginning with the year followed by the release number, so do not assume those two displayed labels must match exactly.
The August 5, 2026 change-log entry lists Dedicated Server cross-tenant capability, Tiny Takeover, Chaos Cubed, bug fixes, and performance improvements. Check the official change log for release details and the download page for the latest available client; release information can change.

Update a Minecraft Education dedicated server
A dedicated server uses a separate migration process from the client app. The official instructions support Windows and Ubuntu server packages:
- Download the latest Windows or Ubuntu dedicated server package from the Minecraft Education update instructions.
- Unzip the new package and stop the old server if it is running.
- Copy these items from the old server directory into the new one:
edu_server_session.json, theworldsfolder,server.properties,allowlist.json,permissions.json, and any other customized files or directories, such as resource or behavior packs. - Start the new server. Its startup console prints a “Server Version” line that can confirm which version is running.
Why might Minecraft Education not update automatically?
Automatic updating can fail because the organization managing a device has blocked it, or because a network restriction prevents the Windows desktop app from reaching its update service. Minecraft Education Support notes: “If a device does not auto update, it may be because your organization has blocked automatic updates.” If you are using a school device, ask the administrator to check the update policy; for the Windows desktop app, ask whether downloads.minecrafteduservices.com is reachable.
