To move households and builds saved in The Sims 4 My Library, copy the source computer’s Tray folder into the Tray folder in the destination computer’s active Sims 4 user folder. The usual location is Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4. Back up the destination folder first, then check My Library in-game. Tray files move Library content—not your save-game progress.

What Tray files contain—and what they do not

The Tray folder stores households and builds saved to the local in-game Library. A single Library item can use several associated Tray files, so copy the entire folder if you are unsure which files belong together. These files are separate from the saves folder, which holds game progress.

My Library content is local to that installation unless you uploaded it to the online Gallery. Gallery content can be accessed through the Gallery on another installation, but locally saved items are not automatically linked to an EA account. See EA’s The Sims 4 FAQ for how My Library and the Gallery work.

Move Tray files between computers

  1. Close The Sims 4. This is a practical precaution to avoid copying while the game may be updating its user data.
  2. Find the source user folder. On Windows or Mac, the usual path is Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4. EA’s backup and reset instructions describe the user folder location and copying it for a backup.
  3. Copy the Tray content. Copy the whole Tray folder, or the relevant files if you know which ones belong to the Library items you want. Put them in a temporary location or on portable storage. A flash drive is one option; EA’s PC-to-Mac transfer guidance uses one to transfer Sims 4 files, though its specific instructions cover the saves folder rather than Tray.
  4. Prepare the destination game folder. If the destination computer has not created a Sims 4 user folder yet, launch the game once and close it. Before changing any existing destination content, copy its The Sims 4 folder somewhere safe as a backup.
  5. Check the active folder if needed. If the usual path is missing or the game later does not show the items, use Game Options > Screen Capture to check the path the game is using. The folder names can be localized in some languages, so use the actual path shown by the game. See the EA Forums helper guidance on missing user content.
  6. Copy into the destination Tray folder. Place the copied files inside the active destination Tray folder. If the operating system asks what to do with same-named files, do not overwrite automatically unless that is what you intend; the backup lets you recover the original destination content.
  7. Open the game and check My Library. Look for the transferred households or builds in My Library. For content you previously uploaded to the Gallery, browse or search the Gallery instead.

Choose a transfer method

Where the item was saved What to do What you need
Only in the source computer’s My Library Copy its Tray files, or the whole Tray folder, to the active destination user folder. Access to the source files and a way to transfer them, such as a flash drive or another suitable file-transfer method.
Uploaded to the online Gallery Find and access the item through the Gallery on the destination installation. The item must be available through the Gallery; local My Library items are not automatically uploaded.

If the transferred items do not appear

  • Check the destination path. Make sure the files are in the user folder the game is actually reading. Use Game Options > Screen Capture to verify the path.
  • Check the folder level. The files need to be inside the destination Tray folder, not merely beside it in The Sims 4.
  • Keep related files together. One Library item may involve multiple Tray files, so recopy the full source Tray folder if you may have selected only part of an item.
  • Look in the right place. Locally copied items should be checked in My Library; items uploaded to EA’s Gallery should be found through the Gallery.

EA documents portable file transfer between PC and Mac for save files, not a Tray-specific cross-platform procedure. Copying Tray files applies the same file-transfer approach to the folder EA’s helper guidance identifies as holding saved households and builds; it should not be read as a claim that Tray content is cloud-synced.
