You may be able to watch a DVD on an Xbox One offline, but the available Microsoft sources do not guarantee that DVD playback works offline in every setup. The safest approach is to finish console setup and updates, install or update the DVD player app, and test the disc while you still have internet access. Microsoft’s setup guidance says an internet connection is needed for initial setup and updates before offline use.
Prepare the Xbox One while you’re online
- Complete first-time console setup. Connect the Xbox One to the internet and finish setup and any required updates. Microsoft’s Xbox One S manual says internet is needed for initial setup and updates before offline use, and notes that a significant update may be required during initial setup.
- Check for a DVD playback app. While connected, open the Microsoft Store and browse its Entertainment section for the Blu-ray Player or another relevant DVD playback app. Install or update it if available. Xbox confirms that console owners can browse apps in the Store’s Entertainment section, but the accessible guidance does not establish that installing the app is required in every case.
- Test the DVD before going offline. Insert the disc and confirm that the player opens and playback starts. This is a precaution: successful online playback does not establish that every console, app version, or disc will behave identically offline.
- Disconnect and try the disc offline. Once prepared, disconnect the console from the internet and insert the DVD. If the player asks for a connection or fails to open, reconnect temporarily if possible, complete any pending setup or app updates, and test again.
Why game-disc advice doesn’t settle DVD playback
Microsoft’s 2013 Xbox Wire statement says that, after a one-time setup, disc-based Xbox One games can be played without connecting online again, with the game disc in the tray. That guidance is specifically about games; it does not confirm that DVD movies follow the same offline rules.

What to expect if the DVD still won’t play
The accessible Xbox Support pages for using Xbox One offline and Blu-ray and DVD controls do not provide readable detailed instructions here. The sources therefore do not establish whether DVD playback always requires prior online authorization, whether a player app is required on every Xbox One, or whether offline behavior varies by model, DVD region, or the console’s current app and firmware state. If reconnecting and resolving pending updates does not help, the available evidence does not support promising that offline playback will work for that particular setup.
