Do you want to stop every natural spawn, or just one modded mob? For broad suppression, use the gamerule supported by your exact Minecraft edition and version. For selected creatures or conditional rules, use a compatible spawn-control mod. The right option depends on your edition, game version, and mod loader.
Choose the right approach
| Your goal | Starting point | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Stop broad natural spawning | The gamerule for your edition and version | Its exact name and scope, and whether modded spawn sources follow it |
| Block selected modded entities | Controlled or another compatible entity-control mod | Minecraft version, loader, and any exceptions you want to preserve |
| Apply location- or condition-specific rules | In Control! | Forge or NeoForge support and the current rule-file documentation |
Stop broad natural spawning with a gamerule
Game rules are world-specific settings that can be changed in-game with commands, but their names and scope vary by edition and version. Fabric documents game rules as world-specific configuration options, while Microsoft Learn’s Bedrock documentation describes DoMobSpawning as controlling whether mobs spawn naturally in the world. That Bedrock description should not be treated as Java command guidance.
Java’s 1.21.9 release notes document spawnMonsters for natural monster spawning and spawnerBlocksEnabled for spawner blocks. These are distinct controls in that release; do not assume one suppresses every kind of spawn or applies to other versions. Check the rule names and behavior for your exact game version before entering a command. Fabric’s game-rule documentation also explains the world-specific nature of rules.
A gamerule is the broadest starting point, not a guarantee that existing mobs disappear or that every modded spawn mechanism is affected. The available evidence does not establish those effects across Minecraft versions and mods.

Block selected modded mobs in-game
Controlled provides an in-game searchable list of registered vanilla and modded entities. Its listing describes rules to block or allow entities, controls by category or mod, per-entity spawn chances, and caps for loaded dimensions. It does nothing by default until you enable rules, so installing it alone is not the same as blocking spawns.
Before installing, check the project listing for a release matching both your Minecraft version and loader. If you only want to stop one creature, use an entity-level rule rather than a broader category or mod-wide rule; review any allow rules or exceptions you need to retain.

Use conditional configuration rules
In Control! uses rule files in config/incontrol. Its spawn.json file can block specified creatures under conditions, which suits rules that depend on where or when a spawn occurs. The listing identifies Forge and NeoForge support and provides version-specific files.
Follow the project’s current documentation for valid JSON fields and examples rather than copying a rule written for a different release. Confirm that the file format, mod version, loader, and Minecraft version all match your installation.

Check these details before changing your world
- Identify whether you are playing Java or Bedrock, then note the exact Minecraft version.
- For a mod, confirm the loader—such as Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge—and choose a matching release.
- Decide whether to block natural spawns generally, particular entities, a category, or spawns only under certain conditions.
- Check whether your chosen rule affects the spawn source you care about; natural spawning, spawner blocks, and mod-specific mechanisms should not be assumed to share one control.
