To run a modded CurseForge Minecraft server, download the server pack for the exact modpack release, follow that pack’s startup instructions, and make sure every player uses a compatible Minecraft version, modloader, and pack build. Start by testing on your own network; configure remote access only after the server works locally.
Find the server pack for the exact modpack release
Open the modpack’s page and select the release you plan to play. Look for a server pack attached to that release, often under Additional Files. A server pack is a prepared distribution for multiplayer; CurseForge defines it as “a specially prepared version of your modpack that allows it to be run on a multiplayer server” in its Server Packs Tutorial, published May 22, 2025.
Do not assume the ordinary client modpack download is a complete server. Server-pack contents vary, but may include folders such as mods, config, and, where relevant, kubejs. A pack may provide launch scripts such as run.bat or run.sh, but those names are examples, not universal requirements. Check the files and notes supplied with the release.
Set up the server files and start it
- Create a dedicated folder. Extract the server pack into a new folder reserved for this server, rather than into your CurseForge client installation or an unrelated Minecraft folder.
- Read the pack’s instructions. Use its included readme and startup script or command. Startup methods differ between packs and modloaders, so there is no single command or memory allocation that applies to every pack.
- Check the Java requirement. Java is required for modpacks, and an outdated installation can cause launch problems. The appropriate Java release depends on the pack and Minecraft version; use the pack’s current notes and consult the CurseForge troubleshooting guide if it fails to launch.
- Complete first-run setup. Start the server using the pack’s instructions. If it creates an
eula.txtfile, read the Minecraft EULA and change the setting to accept it only if you agree. Then launch the server again. See Minecraft Help’s Java server setup guide for the general first-run process.
Match the server and player versions
The server distribution and every player’s client need compatible builds. Check these together before inviting anyone:

- Modpack release: Everyone should install the intended release, not merely a similarly named pack or a different update.
- Minecraft version: The game version must match the server pack’s supported build.
- Modloader: Use the same compatible loader family and build specified by the pack. CurseForge supports loader families including Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, and Quilt; the available combinations depend on the pack and Minecraft version. Its guides explain modpack installation and Minecraft modloaders.
If a player gets a missing-mod, loader, or version mismatch error, first compare their selected pack release and loader with the server’s files. Do not update only the server or only one client unless the pack’s instructions say that combination is supported.
Test locally, then let friends connect remotely
Start the server and confirm that you can join from the host computer or another device on the same local network before changing router settings. CurseForge’s Java multiplayer guide covers local and remote connection examples.

For friends outside your home network, the router may need to forward the server’s connection port to the computer running the server. The exact configuration depends on your router and internet-provider setup; follow your router’s documentation and Minecraft Help’s server networking guidance. Do not expose unrelated services while configuring access.
Keep online-mode=true and consider setting white-list=true in the server configuration so only approved players can join. CurseForge recommends these settings in its multiplayer guide. Add the intended players to the whitelist using the server’s available controls before sharing connection details.

Choose between self-hosting and CurseForge’s hosted option
Self-hosting gives you direct control over the server files, but you maintain the machine, startup process, updates, and any required networking. If you would rather avoid that work, CurseForge documents a hosted-server flow in its app for eligible packs that have matching server packs. As described in the guide modified September 8, 2026, the flow lets you select a pack/server file, plan, region, and server details, then complete payment. CurseForge identifies Shockbyte as the hosting operator and Tebex as the billing provider; management is through a Shockbyte control panel. The guide says the flow is available only for game versions above 1.20.1, so confirm eligibility in the live app before choosing it. CurseForge reported approximately 9,000 supported modpacks in that guide as of September 8, 2026; this is a catalog figure, not a performance measure.
| Plan listed by CurseForge | Monthly price in its September 8, 2026 guide | Listed allocation |
|---|---|---|
| Iron | $12/month | 4 GB RAM; 2 shared CPUs |
| Gold | $24/month | 8 GB RAM; 3 shared CPUs |
| Diamond | $36/month | 12 GB RAM; 4 shared CPUs |
These are the guide’s listed offer details, not independently measured performance guarantees. Prices, allocations, supported packs, regions, and billing terms may change; verify them in the current CurseForge hosted-server guide and purchase flow.

What to check when setup fails
- The server exits during launch: Confirm that Java is installed and that the version is appropriate for this pack. Read the startup notes and error output rather than applying a Java version or memory setting from another pack.
- The server starts but a client cannot join: Compare the client’s pack release, Minecraft version, and modloader with the server. Test from the same local network first to separate a version problem from remote networking.
- Local players can join but remote friends cannot: Check the router’s port-forwarding configuration and verify it targets the server computer. Router and provider setups differ, so consult the relevant documentation.
- No server pack is available: The evidence does not establish that every CurseForge modpack publishes server files. Check the exact release’s files and author instructions; do not treat the client archive as a server pack without confirmation.
