Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFirst check which edition you played. In Java Edition, open the active installation’s logs folder and read latest.log in a text editor. In Bedrock Edition, use Content Log History in-game; the profile screen also shows the current content-log file path.
View logs in Java Edition
- Find the game directory for the installation you used. Minecraft’s standard locations are
%APPDATA%.minecrafton Windows,~/Library/Application Support/minecrafton macOS, and~/.minecrafton Linux. See Minecraft’s Java data-folder instructions for help locating the folder. - Open its
logssubfolder. - Open
latest.logwith a plain-text editor. This is the latest session log. Older session logs have date-based filenames and are compressed as.gz; use a compatible archive tool to open or extract one.
The standard folder may not be the one your game used. Custom launcher profiles and modded instances can have their own game directories. Open the directory configured for the installation you launched, or use that launcher’s folder-opening control, then check its logs folder. Fabric’s guide covers the official launcher and advises third-party launcher users to consult their launcher’s documentation: Fabric’s log guide.
View content logs in Bedrock Edition
- In the game, open Settings > Creator settings and enable content-log reporting.
- To inspect log history in-game, choose Content Log History on the profile screen. If Enable Content Log GUI is on, you can also press
Ctrl+H. - For the current log file, check the path displayed on the profile screen.
Microsoft Learn documents examples including %APPDATA%Minecraft Bedrocklogs on Windows, games/com.mojang/logs under the app’s root storage on Android, and Minecraft/game/com.mojang/logs under the root storage on iOS. Mobile storage roots can vary with the app installation and external-storage configuration, so use the in-game path when available. The documentation does not establish one universal path for every console or app packaging. See Microsoft’s Bedrock content-log documentation.
If the log is missing or you need to share it
Java: check the active instance
If latest.log is not in the folder you checked, confirm that it is the directory for the installation you actually launched. A custom game-directory setting or a separate modded-launcher instance may point somewhere else; there is no single established cause for every missing log.

Share only what is needed
Before posting a log publicly, scan it for usernames, server addresses, local file paths, and other identifying details, and redact anything you do not want exposed. The available documentation does not inventory every field that may appear in every version’s logs. Send only the relevant log to the person helping you troubleshoot.
Launcher problems are a separate issue
If the problem is with signing in or starting the launcher rather than an in-game crash, Minecraft’s launcher guidance recommends checking account and launcher conditions and points to its launcher support resources: Minecraft Help.
