How to Find and View a Steam Game Crash Log

Steam does not keep one crash log for every game. Find the title-specific log or dump, distinguish it from Steam client and Cloud logs, and learn what to send support.

There is no single Steam-wide crash log for every game. Each game decides whether it creates a log, crash report, or dump—and where it saves that file. Start with the game publisher’s support instructions, then check the game’s installation folder and any additional location the publisher specifies. Steam’s own client logs are not a universal record of game crashes.

Find the log for your specific game

  1. Identify the game and operating system. Search the game’s official support site for “crash log,” “crash dump,” “log file,” or the exact error message you see.
  2. Open the game’s installation folder. In Steam, go to Library, right-click the game, and select Properties. Choose Installed Files, then Browse. Look for the log, report, or dump folder described by the publisher.
  3. Check any other path the publisher names. Some games save logs in a user-profile folder rather than beside the installed game files. On Windows, such folders may be hidden; enable viewing hidden items in File Explorer if needed.

Paths are game-specific. For example, Paradox’s instructions for BATTLETECH identify a crash dump in the game’s installation folder and a separate text log at C:UsersYourUserNameAppDataLocalLowHarebrained SchemesBATTLETECHoutput_log.txt. That is an example for one game, not a standard Steam location. Paradox Interactive’s log instructions give the title-specific details.

Know which file you are looking for

  • Game log or crash report: Created by the game or its reporting system. Its name, format, and location depend on the title.
  • Crash dump or minidump: A diagnostic file that may be created when a game crashes. It is not guaranteed to exist, and a dump may need developer tools to interpret; opening an arbitrary .dmp file in a text editor usually will not explain the cause.
  • Steam client logs: These record Steam client activity, not every game’s crashes. Steam lists default log folders as C:Program Files (x86)Steamlogs on Windows, ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/logs on macOS, and ~/.local/share/Steam/logs on Linux. The locations can differ if Steam was installed elsewhere.
  • cloud_log.txt: Steam documents this file as a record of Steam Cloud file writes and retrievals. It is useful for Cloud-sync troubleshooting, not as a general game crash log. See Steam Support’s Steam Cloud information.

What if the game has no visible log?

Not every game creates a user-accessible log or dump. If you cannot find one in the locations the publisher documents, tell the game’s support team that no log is visible and follow its diagnostic instructions. Include the game name, operating system, when the crash happens, and any error message. Send only the files support requests; the wrong type of log may not help diagnose the problem.

SteamOS and Steam Error Reporting

ValveSoftware’s SteamOS guidance notes that crash logs and, typically, steam_stdout.txt can be useful when reviewing logs in the SteamOS environment. This does not establish one shared path for every game, so follow the title’s instructions. ValveSoftware’s SteamOS log-review guide covers that environment.

Steamworks also documents a specific Steam Error Reporting feature that can store mini-dumps locally in a game’s installation directory before upload. It applies only to Windows 32-bit applications, and Steamworks says the feature is nearing end of life with limited support. It is not a dependable source of crash dumps for all Steam games. See Steamworks’ Steam Error Reporting documentation.

Verify the game files if a damaged installation is plausible

File verification can check whether installed game files are intact, but it is not a log viewer and does not ensure that a crash log will be created. To run it, restart your computer and Steam, then:
