To spawn a Copper Golem in Minecraft, place a carved pumpkin or jack o’lantern directly on top of a copper block. There is no separate button, redstone signal, or taming step for the initial spawn. The feature is documented for Java Edition 1.21.9 and Bedrock Edition 1.21.111; update to a release that includes The Copper Age if the recipe or mob is missing.
How to spawn a Copper Golem
- Place a copper block where you want the golem to appear.
- Put a carved pumpkin or jack o’lantern directly on top of the block.
The arrangement spawns the Copper Golem. Mojang’s Copper Age feature page lists the feature for both Minecraft: Java Edition and Minecraft: Bedrock Edition.
What a Copper Golem does
A Copper Golem helps sort items: it takes items from Copper Chests and looks for regular or trapped chests that are empty or already hold that item type. Mojang describes the golems as “handy, organization-loving companions that’ll bring your base to life!”
Java Edition sorting details
Mojang’s Java Edition 1.21.9 release notes specify these mechanics:
#1 Best Overall
- Each Minecraft Legends figure is designed in 3.25-inch scale and comes with its own attack feature.
- Fans can trigger the figure's attack move and battle enemies with easy activation for dramatic play.
- Players will love fidgeting with the attack feature as they contemplate their next difficult in-game move!
- The action figures have movable joints, so Minecraft fans can pose them for action and storytelling play!
- Character design and personality details stay true to the unique, pixelated world of Minecraft Legends -- perfect for collecting!
- When it is not carrying an item, the golem searches nearby Copper Chests and can pick up a stack of up to 16 items.
- When carrying an item, it searches regular and trapped chests for an empty chest or one containing the same item type.
- It visits up to 10 chests or Copper Chests in sequence. If it finds no match, it idles for 7 seconds before trying again.
- The documented search area extends 32 blocks horizontally and 8 blocks vertically from the golem.
These figures describe the Java 1.21.9 mechanics and are not a guarantee for later versions or Bedrock.
How to restore a Copper Golem statue
Statue restoration is different from spawning a new golem. Copper Golems oxidize over time; a fully oxidized, unwaxed golem becomes a statue. Mojang’s release notes say an axe can turn a statue back into a golem only when the statue has no oxidation. If it is oxidized, the documented axe restoration condition is not met.

- The collectible is crafted in 5.5-inch scale with its signature large arms and authentic to the unique, pixelated world of Minecraft!
- Use the accessories to "spawn" a poppy or "drop" an ingot and re-create favorite in-game moments for cool displays!
- Makes a fun, themed gift for Minecraft fans and video-game players ages 6 years old and up -- especially collectors!
The oxidation and restoration behavior is described in the Java Edition 1.21.9 notes and the Bedrock Edition 1.21.111 notes.
Other interaction: make a carrying golem drop its item
If a Copper Golem is already holding an item, interacting with it using an empty hand makes it drop the item. This interaction is separate from the copper-block-and-pumpkin spawning recipe.
