Turn the console off, unplug its power cable and accessories, then clean it using the instructions for its exact model. Use a soft cloth for accessible exterior dust; vacuum vents only when the manufacturer recommends it. Keep liquid out of openings, let the console dry completely, and do not open the case just to remove dust.
How to clean a game console safely
- Power down and disconnect. Turn the console off, unplug its power cable, and detach connected accessories. Follow the care instructions for the model you own.
- Wipe accessible exterior surfaces. Use the cloth and any dampening method approved for that console. Do not push liquid into ports, vents, or other openings.
- Remove vent dust only with an approved method. The right tool varies by model; do not assume that a method recommended for one console is safe for another.
- Do not open the case for routine cleaning. Use manufacturer service instructions for any repair that requires opening a console. Microsoft warns that improper procedures and tools can cause injury or product damage.
- Dry the console and restore airflow. Make sure it is completely dry before use, and leave vents uncovered and unobstructed.

Can you vacuum console vents?
For a PS5 in the CFI-71XX family, Sony’s care instructions recommend a handheld vacuum to remove dust at the vents and beneath removable covers. Nintendo’s Switch 2 health and safety guidance says to use a vacuum to remove dust or other foreign material from its air intakes or vents. These recommendations are model-specific; check your own console’s instructions before vacuuming, and do not insert a tool into an opening.
Can you use compressed air?
Do not treat compressed air as a universal console-cleaning method. Microsoft’s older Xbox One guide explicitly says not to use it, while the other guidance cited here does not establish a single rule covering every current console. Follow the instructions for your exact model rather than applying one brand’s or generation’s directions to another.
When fan noise may need more than cleaning
Sony says a PS5 fan may temporarily run faster during some games. Check for blocked vents, dust, and inadequate space around the console. If the noise continues after addressing those conditions, contact PlayStation Support rather than assuming dust is the only cause.

Keeping dust from building up
- Keep vents uncovered and leave room for airflow. For PS5 CFI-71XX, Sony specifies at least 10 cm of clearance and advises against cramped spaces, long-fiber carpet, and covering the console with cloth.
- Clean only with the cloth, liquid, or vent method allowed for your model.
- Do not use solvents or wet-clean inside the device. Make sure the console is fully dry before reconnecting power.
- No cleaning interval or performance improvement is established in the manufacturer instructions cited here; clean when dust is present and follow your console’s care guidance.
