How Markets Work in Europa Universalis 5

EU5 markets are changing regional systems with their own prices. Here’s how market reach, location access, trade costs, capacity, range, and advantage fit together.

In Europa Universalis 5, markets are changing regional systems where locations buy and sell goods at prices shaped by local supply and demand. Their centers and reach determine which places participate; market access affects how well a location connects to its market; and trade moves goods between markets when you can reach them and cover the costs.

What a market is—and how its reach changes

Paradox Interactive’s developer diary describes a market simply as a place where goods are bought and sold. Each market is anchored by a center location, but the locations included in it can change. The market’s attraction and protection affect its reach, while competing markets can contest locations. If a market is neglected, it can lose locations to a competitor.

Owning a market center is not the same as controlling every location or all economic activity in the market. It helps to separate two questions: which locations belong to a market is about its geographic reach; how much a country can trade depends on trade capacity, range, and advantage.

How markets set prices

Prices are set market by market, rather than being one universal price for each good. Supply and demand in a market determine what a good is worth there, so the same good can be cheap in one region and expensive in another. Production and consumption both matter: buildings use input goods and produce outputs, while populations also contribute demand. Those needs and outputs affect the market’s supply-and-demand balance.

Paradox’s 2025 trade-and-markets developer diary gives possible extremes of 500% of base cost for a scarce good with high demand and −90% of base cost for an oversupplied good with little demand. These are possible bounds described in the diary, not typical prices or guarantees for a particular campaign. Prices adjust over time toward a target informed by changes in supply and demand.

Not every good is naturally available or producible in every market. The diary names gold, silver, copper, mercury, gems, lacquerware, and porcelain as examples of geographically restricted goods or production. A market may therefore need imports to supply its buildings and population, even when importing is not a profitable buy-low, sell-high opportunity.

Market access: the connection between a location and its market

Market access describes how well an individual location is connected to its market center. Distance can reduce access. According to Paradox’s developer diary, lower access can limit the goods available to the location, reduce building output, and shrink its local tax base. At zero access, the location can be cut off from the market’s goods.

The diary identifies roads, moving the market center, and creating a new market as ways to improve that connection. It also explicitly exempts RGO output from the market-access effect. In other words, do not assume every kind of production falls in the same way when access is poor.

If a remote location’s buildings are underperforming, check its market access and its ability to obtain necessary inputs before adding more production buildings. Whether to improve the connection, relocate the center, or create another market depends on the locations and goods involved; there is no universally best arrangement.

How trade works—and why a price gap is not enough

Trade moves goods from one market to another. A country might seek a profit by buying where a good is cheaper and selling where it is more valuable, or import a good because the destination market needs it. The price difference is only the starting point: the game subtracts trade maintenance costs, and distance and tolls along the route further reduce the remaining margin. A higher price in the destination market does not, by itself, prove that a route will make money.

When assessing a trade, consider both the destination’s need and the route’s economics. An import can be useful for supplying buildings or pops even if its costs make it unattractive as pure arbitrage. Conversely, a large-looking price spread can disappear once maintenance, distance, and tolls are accounted for.

Capacity, range, and advantage are different constraints

Mechanic What it determines Ways to increase it named by Paradox
Trade capacity How much a country can import and export in a market. Buildings, advances, and estate privileges.
Trade range Which markets a country can reach for trade. Range is measured between market centers. Advances, laws, estate privileges, and government reforms.
Trade advantage Priority when competing for favorable trades and goods for export; higher advantage gives earlier access to scarce goods. Marketplaces, maritime presence, and control of more locations in the market.

Think of them as answers to separate questions: capacity is how much you can move, range is where you can trade, and advantage is how you rank against competitors. None of these is the same as a location’s market access.

One large market or several?

A large market may simplify administration, but locations far from its center can have poor access. Roads, shifting the center, or forming an additional market can help, but each choice should be judged against the campaign’s actual map and costs rather than a blanket rule. Compare the likely effects on access, goods availability, local building output, and the capacity and range available for trade. For cross-market trade, also weigh the price spread against maintenance, distance, and tolls.

A practical way to diagnose a market problem

  1. Check the location’s market and access. Identify its market center and see whether distance or a weak connection may be limiting goods, building output, or local tax revenue.
  2. Check the good itself. Compare its local market price and availability with the needs of buildings and pops. Do not assume the good is produced locally or present in every market.
  3. For a trade, verify reach and capacity. Confirm that the destination market is within range and that you have room to move the required volume.
  4. Account for competition. Consider trade advantage if scarce goods or attractive routes are contested.
  5. Compare the net trade opportunity. Start with the market price difference, then account for maintenance, route distance, and tolls. If the goal is to supply a shortage, weigh that need separately from whether the route earns a margin.
  6. Choose the remedy that addresses the bottleneck. Improve a connection, move the center, establish another market, or trade across markets as appropriate to the locations and goods involved.

Version context

These mechanics are described in Paradox Interactive’s 2025 developer diary. Exact menus, tooltips, balance, and implementation may change between builds. In a Steam announcement dated October 8, 2026, Paradox described update 1.4 as an open beta with checksum 592b, part of the process leading to an October 28 release. That dated notice does not establish that 1.4 is the final live version; check the build you are playing when following exact interface details.
