1047 Games raised $100 million in venture capital in 2021, and CEO Ian Proulx said the money helped the studio grow to more than 175 people and hire experienced developers to improve Splitgate 2’s production quality. The 2024 GamesBeat interview did not provide an audited breakdown of how the funding was spent. It described the company’s ambitions at the time—not the final shape of the game, which later shifted to an Arena-first relaunch as SPLITGATE: Arena Reloaded.
What did 1047 Games say the funding paid for?
In a September 2024 interview with GamesBeat, Proulx connected the 2021 funding round to building a larger team and bringing in senior talent. He said 1047 had grown to more than 175 people and cited an audio director from God of War Ragnarök, a lead weapon artist from Call of Duty, and an animation director with Ubisoft experience as examples of hires.

Proulx’s stated goal was to raise the game’s production quality. “The most obvious thing you’ll see is the overall quality and level of detail,” he told GamesBeat. He also said, “We’ve put that funding to good use.” These are his descriptions of the company’s hiring and aims; the interview does not itemize the $100 million by expense category or independently audit its use.
In the same interview, Proulx said 1047 was financially in good shape, had raised enough, and had made money. Those statements reflect his account at the time, not an independently verified assessment of the company’s finances.

What was the 2024 plan for Splitgate 2?
At interview time, Splitgate 2 was an upcoming free-to-play multiplayer shooter planned for 2025. Proulx described it as a 4v4 game with three factions, each offering differences in weapons, equipment, attachments, and perks. He presented customization and live operations as ways for the game to evolve after launch.
The plan also reflected a deliberate focus on multiplayer rather than a single-player campaign, which Proulx described as expensive. He said 1047 wanted to put its resources into the kind of experience the studio knew how to make: “I want to make sure I deliver the best multiplayer experience ever, because that’s what we’re good at. That’s what we have the budget to do.” He also identified live operations as a difficult but essential challenge for sustaining a multiplayer game. These were development priorities and ambitions, not proof that every proposed feature or plan was delivered.

Proulx contrasted the larger sequel with the original Splitgate, which he described as starting as a school project and growing from a small team. In the interview, he said the original had passed 22 million downloads since 2019. That is an interview-reported download figure, not an independently validated count of unique players. He also cited approximately 4,000 concurrent users during the closed alpha—a historical snapshot of that test period, not a current player count.
How did the game’s direction change?
Official updates later documented a material change from the faction-led, broader plan discussed in 2024. In September 2025, 1047 said it was refocusing the beta on arena combat, movement, gunplay, and portal combat, and temporarily removing Onslaught and Battle Royale while preparing the relaunch. The company’s Arena-first update describes that shift; it does not explain how the venture funding was spent.

The official launch overview says the team used player feedback while revising systems and refocusing the game around arena-shooter fans. It describes the removal of factions and a return toward classic arena elements—an important distinction from the three-faction structure Proulx discussed before release.

The same FAQ says the original Splitgate’s dedicated servers shut down in mid-August 2025, while peer-to-peer play remained available. That detail concerns the original game, not the relaunch. The current product context matters because the 2024 interview’s upcoming-game framing and faction-based plans are historical, not an accurate description of Arena Reloaded’s later direction.
What the interview does—and does not—establish
The interview provides Proulx’s account of how the funding supported expansion and hiring, plus the production goals he associated with that growth. It does not show how much went to particular functions, how expenditures compared with the original raise, or whether any stated hiring or feature plan can be traced to a specific portion of the funds. The later official updates clarify how the game evolved, but they do not supply that missing financial breakdown.
