ARAM Clash tiers are assigned to teams, not simply copied from each player’s visible rank or calculated as a straightforward average. Riot’s published explanation says the system uses a top-weighted calculation of a team’s ranked data and prior Clash match histories. That means a highly ranked player can pull a mostly lower-ranked roster into a higher tier. Riot has not published the exact weights or tier cutoffs.
What Riot says determines a Clash team’s tier
Riot described Clash as using four adaptive matchmaking tiers to group teams near their skill level. In its 2017 design explanation, Riot said the system considers the roster’s ranked data together with the team’s previous Clash match histories. Riot’s wording is explicit that this is a “top-weighted calculation” of the team’s information, rather than a simple average of everyone’s rank. Riot illustrated the effect with a roster of four bronze players and one diamond player: the diamond player can pull the team toward a higher tier. So if your roster’s assigned tier seems high compared with most teammates’ ranks, the strongest player may be a substantial factor in the team estimate.
Does ARAM Clash use a different tier formula?
Riot has announced and scheduled ARAM Clash events, but the cited official material does not describe a separate ARAM-specific tier formula. Riot’s 2023 dev update announced non-Summoner’s Rift Clash tournaments beginning with ARAM Clash; the 2025 Patch 25.04 notes later listed ARAM Cups in that year’s Clash schedule. Those announcements establish that ARAM is a Clash format, not that its tier calculation differs from the published Clash model.

Why teams with similar average ranks may land in different tiers
Because Riot describes the calculation as top-weighted and includes prior Clash histories, a team’s visible average rank does not tell the whole story. A roster with one standout-ranked player may be evaluated differently from a roster whose ranks are more evenly distributed. Prior Clash results are also a named input, so two teams with similar current ranked profiles may still have different histories informing their placement.
Riot has not published individual-player weights, rank-to-tier conversion tables, thresholds, or a public calculator. There is therefore no reliable way for players to reproduce an assigned tier from visible ranks alone or determine exactly how much any one player affected it.

How smurf detection fits into the explanation
Riot has also described anti-smurf measures as part of its effort to improve skill estimates. In a 2020 “Ask Riot: Smurfs in Clash” response, Riot said it required SMS verification and ranked placement and ran smurf detection behind the scenes. Riot also acknowledged those measures did not catch every smurf. That account describes measures at the time; it does not establish the complete or unchanged state of the system today.
