If Hogwarts Legacy started crashing or showing broken lighting after an update, first identify your platform, the update or build, and the exact symptom. WB Games documented several separate issues—not one universal “after update” bug—including a PC lighting fault tied to NVIDIA driver 555.99, a PS5 crash with Fidelity mode and Ray Tracing enabled, and PC visual-mod compatibility problems. Those reports can help narrow the cause, but they do not diagnose a current player’s system.
Start with the symptom and platform
Before changing settings, note what happens and when. “Broken lighting” could mean washed-out or overexposed scenes, light appearing through walls, bright flashes, flickering reflections, or something else. A crash might occur at launch, during a particular fight, or after playing for a while.

- Platform: PC, PS5, or Xbox Series X.
- Update/build: Which update preceded the problem, and what game build is installed?
- Crash details: When does it occur, and is there an error message?
- Graphics details: On PC, record the GPU, driver version, graphics mode, and Ray Tracing settings.
- Mods: If you play on PC, note whether third-party visual mods are installed.
These details matter because the official fixes were tied to particular platforms, triggers, and dates. Compare your symptoms with the documented cases below rather than assuming every problem after an update has the same cause.
Check whether your issue matches a documented update problem
July 12, 2024: separate crash and lighting fixes
WB Games’ July 12, 2024 hotfix listed build 1231491 for Xbox Series X and PS5, and build 1228792 for PC. It addressed several distinct reports: a PS5 crash with Fidelity mode enabled while Ray Tracing was active; an Xbox Series X crash during the Fastidio fight; and overexposed PC lighting after updating NVIDIA drivers to version 555.99. The patch notes say these named issues were fixed in that hotfix; they do not establish the cause of a similar symptom on a different build or system. Read WB Games’ July 12, 2024 update notes.

For a separate frequent crash affecting some PC systems in that update’s context, WB Games offered a temporary workaround: in Windows, open Settings → System → Graphics and turn off Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling if it is enabled. The studio described the guidance as temporary, not as a universal fix. Check current support information before relying on advice from 2024.
January 30, 2025: PC lighting fixes and mod warning
WB Games’ January 30, 2025 PC patch notes list fixes for several visual faults, including light leaking through walls, overly bright interiors, bright flashes, flickering reflections while flying, and blocky reflections, along with other Ray Tracing, shadow, and flickering issues. The notes also list crash fixes and a launch freeze. These are fixes for the problems named in those notes, not proof that all current lighting or crash reports are resolved. That PC update introduced more granular Ray Tracing controls and DLSS 4 support. It lets players adjust the quality of individual Ray Tracing features, except Ray Traced Ambient Occlusion, as well as geometry settings that affect render distance and detail for Ray Tracing shadows and reflections. These options allow adjustments for supported hardware; WB Games does not say that changing them fixes every lighting defect.
The same notes warn that some older third-party visual mods may be incompatible after engine and serialization changes and can cause crashes. Examples include appearance, clothing, wand, broom, facial-preset, and mount mods. If you use these mods, WB Games recommends removing affected files from local mod folders and then verifying or reinstalling the game. This guidance applies when relevant mods are present; it is not evidence that mods explain a crash on an unmodded installation.

December 3, 2025: a narrower PC hotfix
WB Games lists the December 3, 2025 PC hotfix as build 1613387 for Steam and Epic Games Store, and 1614419 for Windows PC. Its stated fix concerns a display limit that prevented more than 20 favorited or uploaded mods from all appearing. The notes do not claim a general crash or lighting fix. If none of the documented triggers fits, avoid treating a historical patch note as a diagnosis. Use WB Games’ Hogwarts Legacy support category to find platform-specific technical help, including resources for crashes, Steam troubleshooting, and clearing the shader cache. When seeking help, include your platform, game build, crash timing or exact lighting symptom, and—on PC—GPU, driver version, graphics settings, and mod status.
