Hollow Knight: Silksong’s Kickstarter Is So Old It Had Wii U and PS Vita Goals

The Wii U and PS Vita goals were part of Hollow Knight’s 2014 Kickstarter, not a Silksong campaign. Here’s how the Hornet stretch goal led to the sequel.

Silksong did not have a Wii U or PS Vita Kickstarter. Those goals belonged to Team Cherry’s 2014 crowdfunding campaign for Hollow Knight. The campaign funded a Wii U version, missed its PS Vita target, and also included a Hornet character goal that eventually grew into Hollow Knight: Silksong.

Did Silksong have a Kickstarter?

No. Team Cherry’s Kickstarter was for the original Hollow Knight, running from November 18 to December 18, 2014. It raised A$57,138 from 2,158 backers, exceeding its A$35,000 goal. Kickstarter’s campaign record identifies the project and records those totals.

The Wii U and PS Vita references are stretch goals from that original campaign—not platforms promised by a separate Silksong campaign.

What were the Wii U and PS Vita goals?

The Hollow Knight Wiki’s campaign stretch-goal reference lists a Wii U goal at $50,000 and a PlayStation Vita goal at $75,000. The campaign’s final total cleared the Wii U threshold but not the Vita one. The exact goal ladder is documented here by a secondary community source; Kickstarter’s campaign record confirms the overall funding, not these individual thresholds.

That same wiki reference lists a $56,000 goal for a second playable character. That character was Hornet, whose story is the more direct link between the old campaign and Silksong.

How did a Hornet character goal become Silksong?

Team Cherry said Hornet’s adventure was initially planned as DLC for Hollow Knight. As development progressed, the new setting and scope made it too large and distinct to remain an add-on. The studio announced it as a full-scale sequel on February 14, 2019, in its reveal announcement.

  • The Wii U GamePad breaks down barriers between you and your entertainment with a 6.2" 16:9 LCD touch screen, motion control system, front-facing camera, microphone, stereo speakers, rumble feature
  • Console works with most games from the original Wii console, as well as the Wii Remote, Wii Remote Plus, Nunchuk controllers, Balance Board and many other Wii accessories, so you can continue to enjoy your favorite Wii features
  • Play using a Wii Remote controller, the Wii U GamePad controller or a Wii U Pro Controller.
  • Four USB 2.0 connector slots are included. The new console is backward compatible with Wii games and Wii accessories.

Team Cherry described the evolution this way: “Almost from the very start, Hornet’s adventure was intended to take place in a new land, but as we dove in, it quickly became too large and too unique to stay a DLC, as initially planned.”

When did work on Silksong begin?

Team Cherry’s announcement says the first pieces came together after Hollow Knight’s PC release on February 24, 2017. That is a milestone in the project’s development, not a definitive claim that all work on Silksong began on that date. The public reveal as a full-scale sequel came later, on February 14, 2019.

What did the original backers receive?

In its 2019 announcement, Team Cherry said backers would receive a copy of Silksong free. The post specified that qualifying tiers of A$10 or more could choose a PC or Nintendo Switch copy. This was the studio’s arrangement for eligible original Hollow Knight backers, not evidence that Silksong had its own crowdfunding campaign.

Is Wii U or PS Vita a current way to play Silksong?

No. Team Cherry’s current games page lists Silksong for PC, Mac, Linux, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, and links to physical editions. It does not list Wii U or PS Vita. The 2014 goals are a piece of Hollow Knight’s crowdfunding history, not current Silksong platform options.
