If you catch it, check its summary screen for the lighter striped background behind its image. Its color can help confirm the result, but some shiny palettes are subtle.
How to spot a shiny during an encounter
- Watch the entrance. A shiny Pokémon has a brief star or light effect when it appears.
- Listen for the cue. The entrance is accompanied by a pinging sound.
- Use both clues. The effect and sound are the quickest indication before you catch the Pokémon.

How to confirm after catching it
Open the Pokémon’s summary and look at the striped background behind its picture. In Generation III, that background is lighter for a shiny Pokémon. This is a useful check when the species’ color difference is difficult to notice.
Why color alone can be misleading
Shiny colors are specific to each species and generation. Some differ dramatically from the ordinary palette, while others change only a few shades. If the color looks unusual, compare it with that species’ Generation III shiny palette rather than relying on a general impression.

What happens when a shiny evolves?
Shiny status remains through evolution, but the evolved Pokémon may have a very different species-specific shiny palette. Check the evolved form against its own palette instead of expecting it to keep the same colors as its pre-evolution.
FireRed’s shiny odds
The reported baseline rate for Generations III through V is 1 in 8,192 per encounter, according to Serebii.net’s shiny Pokémon guide and Bulbapedia. This is a probability for each encounter, not a countdown: after 8,191 unsuccessful encounters, the next encounter is still reported at 1 in 8,192. Later-generation rates and methods should not be applied to FireRed.

FireRed has documented shiny Pokémon among Trainer Tower opponents: Meowth on floor seven in Single Battle mode, Espeon used by the first-floor Double Battle pair, and Seaking used by the second trainer on floor four in Knockout mode. These are NPC-owned Pokémon, so seeing one does not mean a Pokémon in your party is shiny. Bulbapedia’s Shiny Pokémon guide
