Choose between clearing Corruption and containing it
You do not have to remove every Corruption block. Keeping a contained pocket can preserve access to enemies and unique drops from the evil biome, including drops useful for progression. If you want a fully purified world, plan to search for leftover infected areas after using your cleansing tool.

Containment is a different goal from purification. Tunnels can protect a base or limit spread while you prepare for a full cleanup, but they do not remove the Corruption already inside the boundary.
Before Hardmode: clean small areas and protect important sites
Use Purification Powder for local cleanup
Purification Powder can cleanse small portions of Corruption, making it useful for a limited patch or an urgent spot near your base. It is not a practical whole-world method: thoroughly purifying a world with powder is costly and unlikely to succeed without exhaustive coverage.

Use Sunflowers and containment as interim controls
Sunflowers can help limit surface spread through infected grass before Hardmode. If protecting a base is the priority, make containment tunnels around the infected area. The Official Terraria Wiki describes three-tile-wide tunnels as a Hardmode containment strategy, but surface thorny bushes can spread Corruption up to six tiles. A narrow gap may therefore fail at the surface; widen the separation or line it with non-corruptible blocks.
Exact spread and containment behavior can depend on platform and game version. Check the mechanics for your version if the precise tunnel width matters.

In Hardmode: use the Clentaminator for large-scale cleansing
- Defeat a mechanical boss. The Steampunker becomes available after at least one mechanical boss is defeated.
- Buy the Clentaminator and Green Solution. The Official Terraria Wiki lists the Clentaminator at 2 Platinum. Green Solution is the cleansing solution used to convert Corruption back to a normal biome.
- Work through every infected region. Spray across the affected areas rather than assuming one pass clears the world. Include underground sections and patches that are difficult to see from the surface.
- Inspect the map and revisit remaining patches. The available guidance does not guarantee a one-pass, whole-world clear. Continue checking and cleansing until no infected areas remain, then keep an eye out for spread from any missed location.
The Clentaminator is the effective tool for wholesale cleansing or reversing Hardmode spread. Its reach makes it much more suitable than Purification Powder for a world-scale job, but the result still depends on finding and covering all the affected areas.
After Moon Lord: upgrade to the Terraformer
After defeating Moon Lord, throw the Clentaminator into Shimmer to upgrade it to the Terraformer. The Terraformer is an expanded biome-conversion tool, so it is useful for extensive late-game conversion. Sweep the affected areas and inspect the map afterward just as you would with the Clentaminator.

Why Hallow is not a permanent fix
Hallow blocks Corruption and Crimson from spreading into it, so it can serve as a barrier in some situations. It does not cleanse Corruption already present, and using it as a workaround can leave you managing an uncontrolled Hallow instead. Treat it as a spread-control option, not a substitute for cleansing or careful containment.

The cited Terraria Wiki material identifies the main mechanics across Desktop, Console, and Mobile in relevant sections, but exact spread and conversion details can differ on legacy platforms and between versions. The three-tile tunnel recommendation and six-tile surface thorny-bush distance should not be treated as universal guarantees when the platform or version is unknown.
