For a standard Roblox character using a Humanoid, check humanoid.MoveDirection.Magnitude > 0 to tell whether movement is being directed. That detects movement intent—not necessarily a change in the character’s position. To confirm that the avatar is actually advancing, measure its position or current speed.
Check for movement input on a standard Humanoid
Roblox describes Humanoid.MoveDirection as a read-only, world-space vector indicating the direction the Humanoid is walking. It has unit length when a direction is present and zero length when there is no direction. The simplest check is:

Choose a signal that matches what you mean by “moving”

Roblox documents WalkSpeed as defaulting to 16 studs per second through StarterPlayer.CharacterWalkSpeed. That is a default setting, not a guarantee of actual speed: gradual mobile or gamepad input can produce slower movement. Distinguish avatar movement from camera movement
In Roblox’s default third-person behavior, a moving character faces the direction it is moving. But the camera can rotate around the character independently. Turning the camera is therefore not evidence that the avatar moved. The Roblox player controls documentation describes the default third-person controls.
Use the movement signal for the controller you have
Standard Humanoid
Use MoveDirection to detect directed movement, or observe speed or position when you need to know whether the character is actually moving through the world.

Character Controller Library
Do not assume Humanoid properties apply to every controller. Roblox’s Character Controller Library documents Sensor.IsMoving as an indicator that movement input is being applied.
Custom controllers and observing other players
A custom controller may expose a different signal, so use the API designed for that controller. Also account for execution context: Roblox marks MoveDirection as not replicated. Do not rely on it as a cross-context signal for observing every other player; check the property’s availability and your controller’s networking design.
