On a Steam Deck, press Steam + X to open the on-screen keyboard. On a regular PC running Steam, that Deck shortcut is not a documented universal keyboard setting. If you mean the Steam in-game overlay, press Shift + Tab by default; the overlay is not a text-entry keyboard.
Open the keyboard on Steam Deck
Steam documents Steam + X for both Steam Deck LCD and OLED models. The same shortcut works in Gaming Mode and other Deck interfaces. If it does not appear, hold the Steam button to view the available shortcuts. See Steam’s Steam Deck Basic Use & Troubleshooting Guide.
In Desktop Mode
- If necessary, switch modes using Steam > Power > Switch to Desktop.
- Make sure Steam is running, then press Steam + X.
- If the keyboard does not work well with a particular app or task, connect a physical keyboard and mouse.
Steam’s Desktop FAQ says the shortcut opens the on-screen keyboard while Steam is running, and cautions that some situations may still require a physical keyboard and mouse. For docked use, Steam lists keyboards and mice among common peripherals; many USB devices work as expected, though compatibility can vary. See Docking the Steam Deck.
Using Steam on a PC or Big Picture
Do not assume Steam + X is a general Windows, macOS, or Linux Steam-client shortcut. The official Steam guidance cited here documents it for Steam Deck, not as a universal on-screen keyboard toggle for desktop Steam.

Big Picture is Steam’s full-screen interface for TV and controller use, but it is not a universal keyboard-enabling setting. Steam notes that some games may still need a mouse or keyboard for configuration, installation, or interface setup. Use the input method supported by the operating system or game, or connect a physical keyboard when needed. See Steam’s Big Picture mode.
If you mean the Steam overlay
The Steam Community Overlay is a separate in-game interface, not the on-screen typing keyboard. Its default shortcut is Shift + Tab. To enable it globally, open Steam > Settings > In-game and turn on Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game. To change it for one game, open Library > select the game > Properties > General and enable the same option. Steam notes that overlay behavior can depend on how a game uses Steamworks.
