Enter the address exactly as the server administrator gives it, using the steps for your edition. In Java Edition, go to Multiplayer and choose Direct Connection or Add Server. In Bedrock Edition, go to Play → Servers → Add Server; enter the address and, if required, the port in its separate field.
Java Edition: enter the address in Multiplayer
- From the main menu, select Multiplayer.
- For a one-time connection, select Direct Connection. To keep the server in your list, select Add Server.
- Enter the address supplied by the server administrator, then connect or save the entry.
A Java address can be an IP address, such as 1.0.0.1, or a host-style URL, such as www.example.com. The official instructions give these as examples; they do not require adding https://. Minecraft Help explains Java server addresses and connection options.
When the address includes a port
If the administrator gives you an address in the form 12.34.56.78:25565, the colon separates the port from the IP address. Minecraft’s Java server setup guidance lists 25565 as the default port, but an administrator can configure another one. Use the complete address they provide rather than assuming every server uses the default. Minecraft’s Java server setup guide shows the IP-and-port format.
Bedrock Edition: add the server and its port separately
- From the main menu, choose Play, then open the Servers tab.
- Select Add Server.
- Enter a server name and the address from its administrator. If a port is required, enter it in the separate port field.
- Save the entry and select it to connect.
Minecraft Help lists 19132 as Bedrock’s default port; use a different port if the server administrator specifies one. The support guidance describes manual server additions on computer and mobile, while its console guidance limits players to featured servers. See Minecraft Help’s Bedrock multiplayer instructions.

Use the right address for your edition
An address alone does not make an incompatible server joinable: Java players need a Java server, and Bedrock players need a Bedrock server. The game version must also be supported by the server. Check the server’s instructions for both edition and version before troubleshooting the address. Minecraft’s server guide and its multiplayer requirements cover these compatibility requirements.
If you are joining a server running on your own computer
For a Java server running on the same computer as the game, Minecraft’s setup guide says the host can connect using localhost. Players connecting from outside your home network may need the host to configure networking or firewall access. The Java setup guide cautions against sharing a home public IP broadly; give it only to people you trust. Read Minecraft’s Java server setup guidance and its server download and hosting information.

In every case, follow the server administrator’s exact address and port instructions. Minecraft’s defaults are not guaranteed to match a particular server.
