Roblox’s documented default character WalkSpeed is 16 studs per second. That is the Humanoid’s maximum movement-speed setting—not a guarantee that a character will always move at that rate. Input strength and an experience’s scripts can change the speed a player actually sees.
What does Roblox’s default WalkSpeed mean?
Roblox defines Humanoid.WalkSpeed in studs per second and describes it as how quickly a Humanoid is able to walk. At the default value of 16, a player character can move 16 studs in any direction per second. The property is a maximum speed setting, not a measurement of every moment of movement. Why might a character move slower than 16?
Gradual thumbstick input
On a mobile device or gamepad, a character can move below its WalkSpeed when the controlling thumbstick is moved only slightly away from the center. A value of 16 therefore does not mean that every movement input produces the same speed. Roblox Creator Hub: Humanoid
Experience-specific changes
An experience can change WalkSpeed during play. Roblox’s power-up tutorial, for example, demonstrates increasing the property as part of a gameplay effect. How do creators set a character’s starting speed?
StarterPlayer.CharacterWalkSpeed sets the initial WalkSpeed for player characters and defaults to 16. Changing this starter setting applies to characters spawned in the future; it does not by itself change a character that has already spawned. Roblox Creator Hub: StarterPlayer
Is WalkSpeed a security control?
No. Roblox warns that WalkSpeed is client-replicated and can be modified locally, so it should not be used as a security mechanism or as the sole way to prevent humanoid movement.
