The instructions depend on the edition. Capcom describes Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 as an upgraded version of the 2011 original, Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds, with 12 added characters. The point thresholds below apply to the original game; they should not be treated as instructions for unlocking the expanded edition’s roster. Capcom’s edition comparison explains the distinction.

Original-game characters reported to unlock with points
A GameFAQs user-contributed cheats-page search snippet reports these player-point requirements. The exact thresholds are secondary-source information, not confirmed here by Capcom.

After reaching the required total, return to the main menu; the same guide snippet says the character becomes available then. It does not establish that story completion or a particular difficulty setting is required.

Jill Valentine and Shuma-Gorath are DLC
Jill Valentine and Shuma-Gorath are not part of the four reported point unlocks. Capcom announced them as playable DLC characters, and Capcom Hunter Leo Tan reported their launch on PlayStation Blog on March 16, 2011. Capcom’s announcement said the Special Edition would include the two characters as DLC, with content available four weeks after launch. Capcom’s announcement and the PlayStation Blog launch post document that history.
Whether you can buy or redeem that DLC now depends on the platform, region, edition, and account access. Present-day store availability is not established here, so check the relevant platform’s store and your account’s entitlements rather than assuming the DLC is included or still for sale.

What Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 changes
Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 adds 12 characters to the original roster: Strider Hiryu, Phoenix Wright, Vergil, Frank West, Nemesis T-Type, Iron Fist, Nova, Doctor Strange, Ghost Rider, Hawkeye, Rocket Raccoon, Firebrand, and Red Arremer, according to Capcom’s comparison. Those additions belong to the Ultimate edition; they are not extra point-unlock instructions for Fate of Two Worlds.
