MachineGames treated Indiana Jones himself as the guide to balancing action and comedy in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. The team wanted combat to feel exciting but improvised, humor to arise from the character and situation, and exploration and puzzles to keep the game an adventure rather than a conventional shooter. Developers describe iterative tuning—not a numerical action-to-comedy formula.
Indiana Jones set the design boundaries
MachineGames started with story and character, then asked what players would want to do as Indy. That character-first test helped the team decide what belonged in the game, even when strict realism was not the goal. Creative director Axel Torvenius described a larger-than-life adventure with room for traps and spectacle; designer Jens Andersson summarized the internal test as, “What would Indy do?” (GamesBeat interview; Official Xbox Podcast.)
That question was not a demand that every moment imitate a film scene. It gave designers a practical way to judge whether an action, mechanic, or tone felt consistent with Indy rather than with a generic action-game hero.
Gunplay offered agency, but carried consequences
The team wanted players to be able to pick up and use guns, rather than forbidding that choice. But Torvenius told GamesBeat that firearms were not meant to be as effective as they would be in the real world. The harsher consequences were intended to make stealth and hand-to-hand combat more appealing ways to play as Indy; that describes the developers’ intended incentive, not a guarantee that every player will choose those approaches.

The design challenge extended beyond guns. Torvenius said the team spent substantial time adjusting how much gunplay appeared, how long puzzles lasted, how long stealth sections ran, and when particular mechanics became available. He described that work as extensive tweaking across the team, not as a fixed recipe. The studio’s “adventure action” framing reflected the importance of discovery and exploration alongside combat. (GamesBeat interview; Official Xbox Podcast.)
Comedy was part of how combat worked
For MachineGames, humor was not confined to dialogue or cutscenes. Torvenius said varied, engaging combat mattered, but so did seasoning encounters with Indy humor. The Raiders of the Lost Ark moment in which Indy shoots a sword-wielding opponent rather than entering a drawn-out duel is a recognizable example of the films’ comic action logic—not a template every encounter had to repeat. - An all-new story chapter takes Indiana Jones to the ancient streets of Rome where forgotten catacombs twist into something far more sinister. Indy must outwit a dangerous cult and decipher intricate puzzles designed by emperors to uncover the dark legacy of the Nephilim giants.
- MYSTERIES OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE AWAIT When Indiana Jones encounters Father Ricci, a young priest desperate for help to track down a Roman artifact, a standard treasure hunt soon turns into a perilous journey. Along the way Indy must face the sinister plots of Emperor Nero and his gladiator games, the enigmatic Cult of Mithras, and whatever else lurks in the shadows. Can Father Ricci's cryptic knowledge guide Indy through these treacherous passageways? Only Indiana Jones can piece together this breathtaking mystery.
- EXPLORE THE SHADOWS OF ROME Danger awaits as The Order of Giants takes Indiana Jones beyond the walls of Vatican City and into a brand new open-area map in the bustling city of Rome. Adventure through the crumbling ruins of the Colosseum to the pristine Vatican Gardens. The mystery will also take you into Rome’s ancient sewer system, the Cloaca Maxima, and deeper below ground to foreboding crypts.
- A DANGEROUS CULT The secretive, centuries old Cultists of Mithras are everywhere, striking from the shadows. Their dark red robes reflect the blood oaths to their cause, and they’re willing to kill or die to protect the ancient power they serve.
Lead game designer Zeke Virant offered a direct explanation of how that idea affected mechanics: “I found with Indy, for every mechanic I worked on in the game, it was like, okay, we have combat, but it feels too stiff. Why does it feel too stiff? Because there’s no humor in it.” In other words, a fight could feel wrong not because it lacked another weapon or move, but because it did not capture the character’s humor and physicality. (Lucasfilm design feature.)
The humor had to retain an edge
The intended tone was fun and slightly humorous, but still tense enough to feel like an adventure. Torvenius described it as “supposed to be fun, slightly humorous, but with an edge.” Andersson said the team watched for the point where the comedy became too slapstick. That boundary mattered: a joke could reinforce Indy’s identity, while too much broad comedy risked undercutting danger and suspense. (GamesBeat interview.)

Exploration and puzzles gave action room to breathe
The team wanted discovery to matter in both open areas and more linear sequences. Andersson said exploration should be rewarded even in linear spaces, while Torvenius described uncovering secrets as central to the adventure. That variety helped distinguish the game’s rhythm from a steady run of combat encounters. (Official Xbox Podcast.)
Lucasfilm’s design feature traces the puzzle approach to the map-room sequence in Raiders of the Lost Ark: hidden information, use of Indy’s journal, and the satisfaction of seeing a solution work. Designers also combined puzzle-solving with traversal and retrieval, changing what players had to notice or think about instead of holding them at one contraption for too long. The aim, as level designer Andrew Yoder described it, was to create delight and discovery through shifts in perspective and activity. (Lucasfilm design feature.)

Balance came from tuning several competing goals
MachineGames was not balancing action against comedy on a measurable scale. Its accounts describe a set of connected design judgments: preserve the option to fight with guns, make stealth and hand-to-hand play viable, use humor to loosen combat, keep that humor from becoming slapstick, and vary action with exploration and puzzles. The character test—whether a moment felt like something Indy would do—helped tie those decisions together.
