Fallout 4 has sold over 35 million copies, according to Bethesda Game Studios’ July 17, 2026 statement. Bethesda did not publish an exact lifetime total, so 35 million is a threshold—not a precise final count.
What does “over 35 million” mean?
Bethesda Game Studios said Fallout 4 had “recently passed over 35 million copies sold” in a studio note dated July 17, 2026. That is the latest official lifetime sales benchmark located, and it establishes that the game surpassed the figure; it does not say how far above 35 million the total is. Bethesda Game Studios’ statement describes the game as continuing to attract a new audience every year.

Is the 12 million figure Fallout 4’s total sales?
No. Bethesda Softworks announced in November 2015 that it had launched approximately 12 million units worldwide to meet day-one demand. The announcement referred to units prepared for launch, not a verified count of copies purchased by consumers, and Bethesda said it was shipping more units to retailers as demand continued. Contemporary coverage also noted that the announcement did not provide a consumer sell-through count. Bethesda Softworks’ launch announcement and GameSpot’s report distinguish the launch figure from confirmed consumer sales.
How do the other figures fit?
- Over 35 million copies: Bethesda Game Studios’ lifetime sales threshold, stated July 17, 2026. It is not an exact total. Source.
- Approximately 12 million units: Bethesda Softworks’ 2015 launch figure for units intended to meet day-one demand—not a confirmed count of consumer purchases. Source.
- More than $750 million: A sales-value figure cited in the 2015 launch announcement. It is not a lifetime revenue total. Source.
In 2017, Bethesda marketing executive Pete Hines said Fallout 4 had sold more copies than Skyrim over the same period. That was a period-matched comparison, not a claim about either game’s lifetime total. GameSpot’s report includes his clarification.

Does the 35 million figure include every edition and platform?
Bethesda’s statement reports a game-wide sales threshold but does not break it down by platform, edition, physical versus digital sales, or region. Bethesda separately announced an Anniversary Edition for digital availability on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4, including the base game and six official add-ons. That announcement does not establish current physical retail availability. Bethesda’s Anniversary Edition announcement.
