In The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, press Down on the D-pad to whistle. That does not activate Yunobo’s ability: to launch him, use the Vow of Yunobo after clearing the Fire Temple. If you remember whistling to make Yunobo stop or move, that instruction comes from a specific escort sequence in Breath of the Wild.
How to whistle in Tears of the Kingdom
Press Down on the directional pad on the left Joy-Con. The whistle can call a horse or alert nearby enemies, but it is separate from Yunobo’s Sage ability, as described in Game8’s TotK whistle guide.
How to use Yunobo’s ability instead
To launch Yunobo in Tears of the Kingdom, you need the Vow of Yunobo, obtained after clearing the Fire Temple. Then:
- Approach Yunobo’s avatar and press A to prepare the charge.
- Aim with the left stick.
- Press A again to launch him.
This is the sequence described in Game8’s Vow of Yunobo guide. Whistling does not launch him.

Why you may remember whistling to Yunobo
In Breath of the Wild, whistling is used to signal Yunobo during the Divine Beast Vah Rudania escort quest. That quest-specific stop-and-go instruction is not a general command for Yunobo in Tears of the Kingdom. The distinction between the games is also noted in the Zelda Dungeon Wiki’s whistle entry.

If Down behaves differently on your setup, check the game’s control information: press +, use R to move to the System Menu, then open the control information.
