Wabbajack installs a complete, curated modlist—not just one mod—by using a .wabbajack package to obtain or match the required files and assemble them in a separate installation folder. It does not bundle or redistribute mod assets. You still need to follow the chosen list’s README, which may require prerequisites or manual steps after the installer finishes.
What Wabbajack does during an install
A Wabbajack modlist is a packaged description of a configured mod setup. Wabbajack processes that package, obtains the files it needs, and builds the setup in the location you choose. The project describes the tool as reproducing a modding setup “without bundling any assets or re-distributing any mods.” For Nexus files, it uses the official Nexus API to retrieve download links. That means Wabbajack automates much of assembling a list, but does not mean every required file is necessarily available without user involvement. A list’s README may identify files to obtain beforehand or actions to take after installation.
Choose how to provide the modlist

Prepare the folders before starting
Wabbajack uses two locations with different purposes: the installation folder contains the assembled files needed to play, while the downloads folder stores downloaded archives. Keep each modlist’s installation in its own folder. A downloads folder can be shared across lists so previously downloaded archives may be reused. Wabbajack installation guide
- Choose an installation folder separate from the game directory, Wabbajack’s own location, and other modlist installations.
- Avoid Windows-managed folders for the installation location.
- Use a reusable downloads folder if you want lists to share cached archives.

Install a list from start to finish
- Select the list: Choose it in the Gallery, or select Install From Disk and open the
.wabbajackpackage you already have. - Read its README: Check the game and version requirements, prerequisites, extra files, and any final instructions. Wabbajack’s guide says every modlist has its own README with instructions for installing it correctly. Installation guide
- Set the folders: Choose a unique installation folder for this list and a downloads folder for archives. Apply the folder-safety guidance above.
- Run the installer: Start the installation and allow Wabbajack to process the list and assemble its files. The official documentation says a run may take anywhere from a few minutes to hours, depending on list size, internet connection, and hardware; this is a general range, not a guaranteed estimate. - Complete the list’s final steps: Reopen the README and follow any post-install directions before launching the game.
What may still require manual work
A successful installer run does not necessarily mean the list is ready to launch. Some lists include a Game Folder Files folder with files that must be copied into the game’s directory. The official wiki gives script extender and ENB/ReShade files as examples. Follow the specific list’s README for whether and how to do this; do not assume every list has the same steps. Game requirements also vary. Some games or platforms are tied to particular versions because their core files differ, and some installer types involve more manual work after Wabbajack completes. Use the list’s README and Wabbajack’s supported-games information rather than assuming that one game’s storefront, runtime, or setup instructions apply to all lists. Supported games

If the result is not ready to play
- The installer finished, but the game will not start: Check the README for required post-install actions, including any instructions involving
Game Folder Files. - The list reports a game or version issue: Confirm that your game matches the version and platform requirements stated for that particular list.
- You want to install another list: Give it a separate installation folder. You can reuse the downloads folder, but do not combine the installed list folders.
